In a surprise turn of events at the Augusta National during the Masters, member Michael McDermott found himself with a tee time on Saturday alongside player Tom Kim. McDermott, known as a Masters marker, is called upon when an odd number of players make the cut. While he doesn’t keep an official score, McDermott is no stranger to the big stage and possesses a talent for the game of golf.

McDermott, a member of Augusta National, made his weekend debut at the Masters in 2023, taking over the marker tradition from Jeff Knox. With his classic golf attire and impressive game, McDermott has become somewhat of a legend at the prestigious event. Despite his low profile and lack of interviews, McDermott’s golfing credentials speak for themselves, including winning the Crump Cup and playing in the U.S. Amateur.

Hailing from the Philadelphia area, McDermott is the CEO of Kathmere Capital Management and a youth basketball coach in addition to his golfing pursuits. With an impressive GHIN handicap of +3 and memberships at renowned clubs like Merion and Pine Valley, McDermott is a seasoned golfer with a powerful swing. Kim, his playing partner at the Masters, praised McDermott’s skills on the course, noting his long drives and precise iron play.

As a Masters marker, McDermott’s role is to maintain the pace of play and not interfere with the competition. Despite not keeping an official score, McDermott’s presence on the course drew attention from patrons and players alike. His ability to play well under pressure and engage in conversations with spectators added to his charm and reputation at Augusta National.

Throughout his round at the Masters, McDermott impressed onlookers with his performance and demeanor on the course. His unique position as a member playing alongside professional golfers added to the allure of the event and sparked curiosity among attendees. While McDermott may not seek the spotlight, his presence at the Masters leaves a lasting impression on all who witness his skills and love for the game.

In a sport renowned for its traditions and legends, Michael McDermott stands out as a unique figure at the Masters. His dedication to the game, combined with his humble demeanor and impressive golfing abilities, make him a noteworthy presence on the course. As McDermott continues to make appearances as a Masters marker, his legacy grows, solidifying his status as a beloved figure at Augusta National and beyond.
