Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington has proven its ability to challenge the best professional and amateur golfers in the world. Due to its success, the U.S. Golf Association (USGA) has announced that it will return to the municipal course near Seattle twice over the next 10 years. The USGA will host the 2027 U.S. Junior Amateur and 2033 U.S. Amateur championships at Chambers Bay, making it the fifth and sixth USGA championships to be contested on this design by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Bruce Charlton, and Jay Blasi. The course previously hosted the 2010 U.S. Amateur, 2015 U.S. Open, 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur, and 2022 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball.

During the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, there were several memorable moments for players and fans. Mark Hill, USGA managing director of championships, expressed gratitude for the continued partnership with Pierce County and excitement for bringing premier championships to the special property. The USGA is actively involved in planning these events, with plans to name a stroke-play companion course for both championships in the future. The success of these tournaments highlights Chambers Bay as a favorite destination for golfers and fans alike.

While Chambers Bay is a top-rated course, Pierce County leaders are exploring other options to keep it relevant. One idea being considered is hosting a LIV Golf event, with talks potentially progressing in the near future. The course currently ranks highly on Golfweek’s Best lists of modern courses in the U.S. and top public-access courses in Washington. The importance of visibility and continued success is emphasized by officials, with a focus on attracting elite golfers and maintaining revenue levels.

Despite the challenges of maintaining a high level of interest and revenue, Chambers Bay continues to attract both local and out-of-town golfers. The course’s success is driven by visitors who pay higher fees, highlighting the economic impact of tourism on the property. Keeping Chambers Bay as a prominent golf destination is crucial for Pierce County, as the course is intended to drive tourism and economic growth. Regular USGA tournaments and potential televised events are seen as key to maintaining the course’s value and appeal to golfers worldwide.

The potential partnership with LIV Golf presents an opportunity to bring new and exciting events to Chambers Bay, generating additional revenue and visibility. However, officials are cautious about potential challenges related to golf and world politics. The goal is to adapt to changes in the golf market and attract a diverse range of golfers to the course. By staying agile and open to new opportunities, Chambers Bay can continue to thrive as a premier golf destination for years to come. The future of Chambers Bay as a golf bucket list destination depends on strategic planning and partnerships to elevate its status in the golf world.
