Garcia announces plan to rejoin DP World Tour in hopes of making Ryder Cup comeback

Sergio Garcia made history during the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris by becoming the top European points scorer. Despite resigning from the DP World Tour in 2023 due to legal sanctions imposed on him for joining LIV Golf, there is now speculation about Garcia potentially rejoining the Tour. European captain Luke Donald recently revealed that he has spoken with Garcia about rejoining the Tour, opening up the possibility of a sensational Ryder Cup return for the 44-year-old Spaniard.

The sports arbitration panel had ruled the sanctions against Garcia and others who joined LIV Golf as legal, leading many to believe that his Ryder Cup career had come to an end. However, Donald’s update on Garcia’s intentions to rejoin the DP World Tour has brought new hope for Garcia’s eligibility to participate in the Ryder Cup. Despite having resigned in 2023, Garcia is now considering rejoining the Tour and has been in discussions with Donald on the matter.

In order to be considered for renewal of his European circuit membership, Garcia would need to pay over £1.5m in fines accumulated from competing in LIV Golf events that conflicted with DP World Tour events over the past two years. Additionally, Garcia would also have to serve a suspension. Currently ranked 390th in the world, Garcia would likely have to rely on a captain’s pick for the 2025 Ryder Cup matches if he returns, which may not sit well with European players who have remained loyal to the DP World Tour.

Despite the obstacles that Garcia would need to overcome, he appears determined to make a comeback. Donald stated that Garcia is very interested in rejoining the DP World Tour, fully understanding the rules and regulations that come with it. The decision ultimately lies with Garcia on whether he is prepared to fulfill all the requirements. The possibility of Garcia participating in the Ryder Cup once again has sparked speculation and excitement among fans and players alike.

If Garcia does make a comeback and is selected for the Ryder Cup, it would undoubtedly add a layer of excitement to the prestigious event. His experience and talent could prove to be valuable assets to the European team. However, it remains to be seen whether Garcia will be able to meet all the necessary conditions and secure a spot in the 2025 Ryder Cup matches. The coming months are sure to bring further developments and anticipation as Garcia contemplates his return to the DP World Tour.
