Discovering Golf and Culture in South Korea: A Journey through Iconic Courses

South Korea, an emerging gem in the world of golf, has recently been added to the Golfweek’s Best raters’ passport. Following a series of tours across various Asian countries, a dedicated team of international panelists spent two invigorating weeks in South Korea, uncovering not just exceptional golf courses but also a rich cultural tapestry that defines this dynamic nation.

Upon their arrival at Incheon International Airport, the raters, fatigued from long-haul flights, collected their luggage and made their way to their hotels to rest. The following morning, refreshed and eager to embark on their adventure, they set out for Yeonsu-gu District, where their golfing journey began at the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea. This course is renowned not only for its challenging layout but also for its stunning architectural design, embodying the spirit of the sport in this fast-evolving country.

The Rise of Golf in South Korea

The popularity of golf in South Korea has surged in the last fifty years, evolving from its roots established in 1905 at Seoul Golf Club to a booming industry today. With over 500 golf courses catering to roughly 4.5 million active golfers, South Korea has positioned itself as a global leader in the sport. Additionally, it leads the world in screen golf, with more than 10 million rounds played each year in virtual environments. Golf tourism is also on the rise, with over one million international visitors flocking to South Korea to experience its diverse golf offerings.

The Golfweek’s Best team was eager to witness this golf renaissance firsthand, and Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea offered the perfect start. The course presents an exhilarating challenge, demanding precision and strategy as players navigate its demanding forced carries and well-guarded greens. Interestingly, the course’s design incorporates a rugged rock outcrop, adding a vertical element reminiscent of dramatic courses in destinations like Dubai.

South Cape Owners Club: A Visual Delight

After an engaging morning at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club, the group embarked on a four-hour bus ride to the South Cape Owners Club. While a few may have dozed off during the journey, the excitement was palpable as they arrived at their next destination. Known for its breathtaking surroundings, South Cape Owners Club proves that golf is as much about aesthetics as it is about skill. Situated on a hill, this course overlooks the picturesque coastline and islands, truly blending nature with the game.

As rater Brad Foltz aptly remarked, “The routing at South Cape Owners Club makes maximum use of the dramatic seaside cliffs and ocean views.” This sentiment was echoed by others, highlighting the course’s stunning layout, which reflects both beauty and innovation. Consistently praised, it holds the No. 38 spot on Golfweek’s rankings of the top 100 courses outside the U.S., establishing itself as a must-visit for any serious golf enthusiast.

An Unforgettable Experience on Jeju Island

With their visit to South Cape complete, the raters took a short flight to Jeju Island, home to the acclaimed Nine Bridges course. Celebrated globally, this rolling parkland layout is notable for its variety and demanding gameplay, which challenges players to execute exact shot placements. The recent revamp of the course’s bunkers added dramatic depth, creating formidable obstacles that require strategic thinking and precise execution.

Standout holes at Nine Bridges include the stunning par 4 fourth and the high-stakes par 5 finisher, which features an island green. Rater Lina Martin noted the exceptional quality of the courses they played, emphasizing that each one surpassed the last in terms of both challenge and visual allure. The evening spent sampling local cuisine in downtown Jeju City further enriched their experience, filled with flavors unique to Korean culture and complemented by traditional entertainment.

Exploring Golf in Seoul: A Melting Pot of Modern and Traditional

Returning to Seoul, the raters discovered a bustling metropolis that embodies both modernity and tradition. With half of South Korea’s 50 million residents living in the capital, the vibrant city pulsates with life, featuring superb architecture, a renowned public transportation system, and an array of cultural experiences. Rater Mary Lou Johnson praised the efficiency of Seoul’s subway, which offers a convenient way to navigate the city’s diverse offerings.

Seoul also boasts a unique juxtaposition of heritage and modernization. Rater Lina Martin captivatedly described the striking contrasts between skyscrapers and historic sites, noting how the city preserves its cultural identity amid rapid development. This rich historical narrative includes a tangible connection to North Korea, with the proximity of the Peace Ecopark providing glimpses into life just across the Han River.

Scenic Golf Courses Surrounding Seoul

Venturing northeast of Seoul, the raters explored some of the country’s most stunning golf courses, including Whistling Rock Country Club. Known for its dramatic landscapes, this course has been constructed with meticulous attention to detail, integrating natural geological features into its design. The highlight is the drivable par 4 fourth hole, showcasing an infinity green that overlooks the breathtaking clubhouse.

Close by, the ultra-exclusive Haesley Golf Club captivates players with its serene environment and stunning vistas. Designed by David Dale, this course embraces a harmonious flow through its hilly terrain, rewarding golfers with strategic opportunities that cater to both skill and artistry in gameplay. Highlights include the 10th hole, a visually striking double-forced carry leading to an island green framed by an artificial waterfall.

Culinary Experiences and Cultural Immersion

As the raters completed their golfing journey, they had several evenings to immerse themselves in Seoul’s vibrant culinary scene. Renowned for its diverse food options, the city offered an array of choices, from traditional dishes to modern fusion fare. The raters indulged in iconic street food at Myeongdong and Gwangjang Markets, sampling delicious treats like tteokbokki and kimbap.

Trendy eateries in areas like Gangnam and Itaewon provided the perfect backdrop for trying popular dishes such as bibimbap and bulgogi. Sharing meals communally, raters enjoyed the unique Korean tradition of slicing pancakes with scissors, fostering camaraderie and creating warm, lasting memories.

Final Days and Memorable Farewells

Concluding their journey, the raters found themselves at Woo Jeong Hills, where a recent championship showcased the course’s challenging layout. Architect Perry Dye designed a course that demands precision, featuring water hazards on two-thirds of its holes, including an island green reminiscent of the legendary TPC Sawgrass. Subsequently, they completed their journey at Jade Palace Golf Club, an engineering marvel with picturesque scenery and impressive design.

Throughout their time in South Korea, the raters were consistently amazed by the overall quality of golf courses and the rich cultural experiences. The blend of sport and sightseeing highlighted the beauty and diversity that South Korea has to offer, leaving an indelible mark on their memories.

A Journey of Discovery Through Golf

In summary, the raters’ trip to South Korea stands as a testament to the nation’s blossoming golf culture and rich heritage. “As a Korean American, it was deeply rewarding to share the beauty and heritage of my homeland with fellow raters,” said Sojung Lim, reflecting on the powerful connections made through their shared love for the game.

In a journey filled with unforgettable rounds of golf, culinary adventures, and cultural explorations, the raters departed with gratitude for the experiences that blended their passion for golf with the rich offerings of South Korea. “Gam sa ham ni da,” they expressed, reflecting on the warmth and hospitality they encountered at every turn.

This truly unique golfing odyssey has not only showcased some of the best golf courses in the world but has also revealed how golf can foster bonds and create lasting memories across cultures. South Korea is not just a destination for golfers; it is a haven for those seeking to experience the beauty and vibrancy of a culture that embraces both tradition and innovation.
