Grayson Murray, a 30-year-old PGA Tour player, tragically passed away on Saturday morning after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge due to an illness. His parents, Eric and Terry Murray, released a statement expressing their grief over the loss of their son. Grayson had shot 68 in the opening round of the tournament and was two over in the second round when he withdrew with two holes remaining after making three straight bogeys.

The Murrays, through the PGA Tour, shared that they have been in deep mourning over the previous 24 hours as they try to come to terms with the devastating loss of Grayson. They described it as a nightmare to both admit to themselves and announce to the world that he is no longer alive. The statement went on to reveal that Grayson had taken his own life, noting that he had faced challenges with alcohol addiction and depression for years.

Despite Grayson’s struggles, he had managed to earn his PGA Tour card again with two victories on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2023. He started the season with a win at the Sony Open in Hawaii, marking his second PGA Tour victory. Eric and Terry Murray emphasized that Grayson was loved by his family, friends, fellow players, and many others, and that he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan expressed his devastation over Grayson’s passing, describing the tour as a family that is deeply affected by the loss of one of its members. Peter Malnati, who played with Grayson in the first two rounds at Colonial, tearfully shared his thoughts on the tragic event. He emphasized the competitive nature of golf and how it can be easy to get caught up in the game, but tragedies like this serve as a reminder of our shared humanity.

Malnati reflected on Grayson’s past struggles and how he had overcome them to get his life back on track, making his passing all the more heartbreaking. The golf community came together to mourn the loss of Grayson Murray, recognizing him as a talented player who had faced personal challenges but had shown resilience and determination in his career. The news of Grayson’s death sent shockwaves through the world of golf, prompting an outpouring of support and condolences for his family and loved ones.
