Great Britain & Ireland secured a historic 10½-9½ victory over the USA in the 43rd Curtis Cup at Sunningdale, led by Captain Catriona Matthew. This victory marked the first win for GB & I in the Curtis Cup since 2016 and only the ninth win in the history of the contest. The team needed 3.5 points from the eight singles matches to triumph, and players from Ireland, England, and Scotland delivered victories to secure the win.

The final day of the Curtis Cup saw a tense and thrilling competition that ebbed and flowed, with the USA initially taking the lead in six matches. However, GB & I staged a remarkable fightback to secure victory, with each member of Matthew’s team contributing at least a point. A record crowd of 16,680 spectators enjoyed the three-day event at Sunningdale, with notable figures like Justin Rose, Charley Hull, and Colin Montgomerie in attendance.

Fifteen-year-old Asterisk Talley secured the first point for the USA in the singles matches, defeating Lottie Woad in an impressive display. Players like Patience Rhodes and Sara Byrne delivered crucial wins for GB & I, with Byrne maintaining an unbeaten record throughout the competition. The match came down to the wire, with Lorna McClymont and Mimi Rhodes securing decisive victories to ensure a GB & I triumph.

The victory sparked joyous scenes on the final green as the team celebrated their hard-fought win. Captain Catriona Matthew praised her team for their resilience and determination, noting the fantastic golf played by both sides throughout the competition. The future of women’s golf looks promising as the Curtis Cup showcased the talent and competitive spirit of the players from Great Britain & Ireland and the USA.

The Sunningdale event marked the first time the Curtis Cup was hosted at the prestigious venue, with a strong contingent of top amateur players from both teams competing. The match featured a thrilling conclusion as GB & I fought back from an initial deficit to claim victory. Notable performances from young talents like Asterisk Talley and experienced players like Rachel Kuehn added to the excitement of the competition.

The match had several standout moments, including Patience Rhodes’ commanding win over Zoe Campos and Sara Byrne’s impressive victory against Catherine Park. Lorna McClymont’s decisive performance against Megan Schofill and Mimi Rhodes’ gutsy comeback against Melanie Green were instrumental in securing the win for GB & I. The competitive spirit and sportsmanship displayed by both teams added to the spectacle of the Curtis Cup.

Overall, the 43rd Curtis Cup provided a showcase of exceptional talent, fierce competition, and thrilling moments for spectators and players alike. The victory for Great Britain & Ireland will go down in history as a memorable triumph over a strong USA team. The event highlighted the bright future of women’s golf and the camaraderie and sportsmanship that define the Curtis Cup competition.
