The Journey of Sahith Theegala: A Mother’s Love and Support System

Sahith Theegala isn’t just any golfer on the PGA Tour; he’s a towering 6-foot-3 and a fan favorite. But what really draws a crowd is the squad he brings along—his A-list support crew, which often includes his parents, girlfriend, family, friends, and even those fans charmed by his appearance in Netflix’s “Full Swing.” When Sahith clinched his first PGA Tour title at the 2023 Fortinet Championship in California, you could find over 30 of his closest supporters cheering louder than the rest of the crowd after every impressive shot. “The support I have is mind-blowing,” he said post-victory. With such a strong backing, it’s easy to see how Sahith has risen to fame, but who’s behind this success story? Let’s dive into the heart of his family, starting with the woman who raised him, his mom.

In 1992, far from golf courses and bright lights, two families came together in India for a traditional arrangement that would create a legacy. Karuna and Muralidhar (or Murli, as his friends and family call him) formed a life based on trust and love, despite being new to each other. Karuna shared, “I didn’t know what to say at first, but I trusted my parents.” With Murli’s background in the U.S. and their shared ambition, they built a new life in California, bringing their cultural roots along for the ride.

Settling in Chino Hills, the couple faced the typical ups and downs of adjusting to a new country, but through it all, they leaned on each other. “It was such a big journey for us, and we were together in it,” Karuna recalls. Completing their education and starting careers, they welcomed their first son, Sahith, in 1997, followed by his brother Sahan six years later. The bond they formed during this time was anything but typical; their family became a blend of cultural values and new American experiences.

As a mom, Karuna wasn’t just about academics; she prioritized emotional connections and quality time with her boys. “We created a loving, safe bond with them,” she said. Knowing how vital family is, especially being so far from her own, Karuna cultivated a close-knit community around them—a “Team Theegala,” if you will. This group wasn’t just about sharing your glorious wins but also cheering Sahith on his journey from youth to professional golf, and they did it with heart!

Now, let’s flash forward a bit. It’s no surprise that Murli’s newfound hobby of golf passed down to his sons. While not a common activity in India, Murli took to the greens out of sheer athleticism. Before he knew it, Sahith and Sahan were picking up clubs and swinging away. “Even while I was nurturing their academic strengths, introducing them to golf as a family activity was key,” shared Karuna, highlighting the importance of sibling bonding. Fast forward to today, and Sahith is a three-time All-American and making headlines.

Watching your son navigate the pressures of the professional world isn’t always easy, especially for a mom like Karuna, who worries like any other parent. She frequently admits, “I get nervous about how he handles his responsibilities. With fame comes expectations, and I can’t help but think about injuries.” The anxiety is real, but so is her unwavering love. Karuna would rather see Sahith happy and fulfilled than all the trophies in the world.

As Sahith’s career skyrockets, so does the pressure. He’s faced with expectations from fans and sponsors, and he sometimes puts that weight on himself. Karuna says she wants him to find that delicate balance between his success on the course and his happiness off it. “If I could give advice to my younger self, I’d stress the importance of self-care while parenting,” she laughs. It’s a journey of learning and adapting for every parent, but Karuna’s insight showcases her wisdom.

With each tournament, each swing, and each putt, Sahith is the product of more than just talent. He’s a testament to the love and values instilled in him by both his parents. Karuna makes a point that resonates with many: “Once you’re in mom mode, it doesn’t go away.” Every worry, every cheer, every moment spent cheering from the sidelines showcases the love and effort she put into crafting a supportive home.

As Sahith continues to evolve into one of golf’s stars, one thing remains clear: his mother’s mark is all over his journey. The dynamic between them encapsulates what it means to chase dreams with family by your side. With Team Theegala cheering loudly, there’s no telling how far Sahith can go. Whether it be winning titles or simply enjoying life on the greens, it’s his mother’s spirit that guides him, providing not just a foundation but a safe space to grow and thrive.

This story serves as a beautiful reminder that behind every athlete is a rich tapestry of family love and support. The journey of Sahith Theegala—a blend of cultural roots, sacrifices, and an unwavering support system—reminds us of the value of family and community in achieving greatness. So, here’s to Sahith and the incredible journey ahead, backed by a loving mother’s heart!
