Honoring the Golfers We Lost in 2023

Golf lost a number of legends in the past year, one of whom was Betsy Rawls. Despite starting golf late at age 17, Rawls went on to win eight major championships, including four U.S. Women’s Opens, and 55 LPGA titles. She had a degree in physics from the University of Texas and made a significant impact on the game, both as a player and an ambassador.

Rawls was just one of many individuals who left their mark on golf in different ways. From English professional golfer who won the inaugural Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf to Guam legend known for his work with the Guam Junior Golf program, these individuals cared deeply about the game and worked tirelessly to better it. Each deserves to be remembered and honored for their contributions to the sport.

One of the notable figures in the world of golf was a European rules official known as the “guru” of rules officials. With over 40 years of experience, he helped evolve the Rules of Golf and worked at various prestigious events like The Open and the Olympic Games. His dedication and expertise helped ensure the integrity and fairness of the game for players and fans alike.

Another impactful figure in golf was a longtime Augusta National caddie who had the honor of looping for Fuzzy Zoeller when he won the 1979 Masters. He was considered an unofficial historian for Augusta National caddies and had the privilege of working with several top players over the course of his career.

There was also a Texan golfer who won the 1967 PGA Championship and was a member of the North Texas State golf team that won four consecutive NCAA titles. His success on tour, with 10 PGA Tour titles and 22 Senior PGA Tour victories, solidified his place in the history of the sport.

In addition to these players and officials, there were also notable figures like a publisher of Golf Digest, a golf teacher who broke barriers for Black pro golfers, and a pioneering golf coach who brought his teams to the NCAA Championships multiple times. Each individual made significant contributions to the world of golf and will be remembered for their dedication and impact on the sport.

The golf world also lost some of its prominent voices, including an iconic announcer for The Open Championship who was known for his distinctive Scottish accent and signature calls. His presence on the course added to the ambience of the game and connected with fans and players alike.

Overall, the individuals who passed away in the past year have left a lasting legacy in the world of golf. Whether through their playing careers, contributions to the rules and organization of the game, or their impact on future generations of players and fans, these individuals will be remembered for their dedication, passion, and love of the sport. Their stories and accomplishments will continue to inspire and influence the world of golf for years to come.
