Ruoning Yin, also known as Ronni, has had a remarkable rise in the world of professional golf. In just a short amount of time, she went from missing the cut in more than half of her events in her first LPGA Tour season to winning a major championship (KPMG Women’s PGA Championship) and climbing to the No. 1 spot in the Rolex World Golf Ranking in 2023. She also secured an additional victory at the DIO Implant LA Open and had eight other top-10 finishes. At only 21 years old, Yin is only the second Chinese golfer to reach the top spot in the Rolex ranking, following in the footsteps of Shanshan Feng.

One of the key factors in Yin’s rapid improvement on the course is her ability to consistently recover from bad shots. Ranking second on the LPGA Tour in strokes gained/scrambling, Yin excelled at getting up and down from off the greens, saving par two out of every three times she missed the green in regulation. Her success in this area has been attributed to her mindset, as she emphasizes the importance of being prepared for missed greens and having a plan to get the ball close to the hole.

Yin believes that having a solid short game is all about hitting the ball consistently with the center of the clubface. She encourages amateurs to avoid overly technical shots and focus on executing the simplest shot for the situation. In collaboration with her coach, Gareth Raflewski, Yin shares her insights on navigating common challenges around the greens, providing tips for golfers to improve their short game skills.

When faced with tricky situations such as hitting from the rough with an obstruction between the ball and the green, Yin advises against attempting flop shots. Instead, she recommends utilizing a lofted wedge with an open clubface and stance while placing more weight on the front foot to increase the angle of attack. By keeping pressure on the front foot during the swing and maintaining firm wrists, golfers can execute the shot with higher accuracy and avoid leaving the ball short.

Yin also offers guidance on playing shots from tight lies below the green, emphasizing the importance of setup adjustments to prevent chunked shots. By slightly opening the clubface and lifting the heel end of the club off the ground, golfers can avoid digging into the turf and achieve a cleaner strike. Keeping the arms and torso moving together during the swing and focusing on a connected motion can further enhance the quality of the shot, ensuring that it reaches the green and carries the desired distance.

To capitalize on successful recovery shots, Yin recommends maintaining a steady finish when putting and utilizing a drill to build confidence and focus on making putts within a specific time frame. By emphasizing the importance of consistency in short game performance and providing practical tips for overcoming common challenges around the greens, Yin’s expertise can help golfers of all skill levels enhance their scoring opportunities and save valuable strokes on the course.
