Playing golf in windy conditions can be a challenge, but it is a necessary skill to learn in order to excel in the sport. Tom Kite, a 19-time PGA Tour winner, shared his knowledge on hitting knockdown shots in the wind in a November 1979 issue of GOLF Magazine. Kite, who grew up in Texas where the wind was a constant factor, knew the importance of being able to control the ball in challenging conditions. He emphasized the need to use a knockdown shot, which keeps the ball low and allows for greater control, especially in windy and crosswind situations.

One of the key factors in executing a successful knockdown shot is to use one more club than you would under normal conditions. This allows you to avoid having to swing hard to reach your target, which can be difficult in windy conditions. By positioning the ball back towards your right foot in your stance, you can deloft the club and ensure that your hands are ahead of the clubhead at impact. This setup is crucial for controlling the height of the ball flight and ensuring a consistent shot in windy conditions.

Another important aspect of the knockdown shot is maintaining the position of your hands ahead of the clubhead throughout the swing. By keeping slightly more weight on your left side at address and avoiding shifting your weight to the right on the backswing, you can achieve a shorter backswing and a smoother, easier swing. This helps prevent the common mistake of swinging too hard in the wind, which can lead to inconsistent shots and loss of control. Kite advises against overdoing it with the knockdown shot and emphasizes the importance of practice in mastering this technique.

By following a few key principles, you can improve your ability to hit knockdown shots in windy conditions. Playing the ball back in your stance, maintaining slightly more weight on your left foot, and shortening your backswing are essential elements of a successful knockdown shot. Keeping your hands in front of the clubhead and adjusting your stance if needed can help ensure a square clubface at impact and prevent the ball from drifting off target. With practice and dedication, mastering the knockdown shot can lead to improved performance in windy conditions and better overall control on the golf course.
