The Open Championship is one of the most iconic tournaments in golf, and it always has a special feel as the fourth and final Major of the year rolls around. The tournament draws a huge field from all around the globe, including amateur players who have earned their spots in the lineup through various means. Let’s take a closer look at some of the talented amateurs chasing the dream of winning the Claret Jug.

Gordon Sargent from the United States is the world No.1 amateur who earned his spot at Royal Troon after winning the Mark H McCormack Medal for topping the men’s world amateur ranking for 2023. Despite having the opportunity to turn professional after earning his PGA Tour card, the 21-year-old has decided to return to college for his senior year. Sargent, who went unbeaten in last year’s Walker Cup, will still be eligible to turn professional next summer following the NCAA Championship.

Jacob Skov Olesen from Denmark earned his spot at Royal Troon as the Amateur Champion 2024. He made history as the first Danish player to win The Amateur Championship, booking his place at Royal Troon for the first of three Major engagements that come with winning The Amateur, including The Masters and US Open next year. Calum Scott from Scotland, the Open Amateur Series winner, also secured his spot at The Open after a solid performance, despite a heartbreaking collapse in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Amateur Championship.

Jasper Stubbs from Australia qualified as the Asia-Pacific Amateur champion, utilizing home advantage at Royal Melbourne. Mexican Santiago de la Fuente qualified for The Open after winning the Latin America Amateur in Panama and aims to make the weekend this time after missing the cut in both The Masters and US Open earlier in the year. Tommy Morrison, the European Amateur Champion 2024 from the United States, became the first American to win the European Amateur and will be looking to make a mark at Royal Troon.

Altin Van Der Merwe from South Africa, the Africa Amateur Champion 2024, also secured his spot at The Open after winning the first-ever Africa Amateur Championship. Dominic Clemons from England showed mental toughness by qualifying for The Open just ten days after losing the Amateur Championship final. Luis Masaveu from Spain secured a spot at The Open by coming through a tense playoff despite playing with an old set of clubs, while Jaime Montojo Fernandez from Spain joins him after finishing joint second in the qualifiers. Liam Nolan from Ireland secured his spot at The Open after a nerve-wracking final putt at the qualifiers.

These talented amateur players bring a mix of skills, experiences, and backgrounds to the field at The Open Championship. Each player has earned their spot through various qualifiers, championships, and rankings, showcasing the depth of talent in the amateur golfing world. As they compete against seasoned professionals on the grand stage of Royal Troon, they have the opportunity to make a name for themselves and inspire future generations of amateur golfers. Keep an eye out for these rising stars as they chase their dreams of winning the Claret Jug at The Open Championship.
