Learning how to aim in golf is crucial for every golfer, whether they are a novice or seasoned player. Many amateur golfers struggle with aiming properly, often aiming at the flagstick or green which is hundreds of yards away. However, a simple aim and alignment tip can make a significant difference in improving accuracy and precision in every golf shot. By choosing an intermediate target just a few inches in front of the ball, golfers can ensure they are aimed properly and increase their chances of hitting the target. This tip, shared by GOLF Top 100 Teacher Jim Murphy, is a quick fix for those frustrating mishits that often result from improper aim.

When setting up for a golf shot, it is important to visualize the ball’s path to the target from behind and pick out an intermediate target that is close to the ball. Murphy recommends choosing a target that is about 6-8 inches in front of the ball, as this makes it easier to aim accurately. By focusing on a target that is close to the ball rather than far away, golfers can enhance their aim and alignment for each shot. Grounding the club to square it up with the intermediate target and setting the body accordingly can help ensure that the shot is aimed in the right direction.

During a lesson with Jim Murphy, the author of the article, he identified a simple divot that was about half a foot in front of the ball, which served as the intermediate target. By following Murphy’s recommended process of aiming the golf club, grounding it to square it up with the target, and setting the body accordingly, the author was able to see a significant improvement in his aim and alignment. The tip of finding an intermediate target close to the ball and squaring up the club before hitting the shot can help golfers of all levels improve their accuracy on the course.

GOLF.com’s series, Shaving Strokes, focuses on sharing improvements, learnings, and takeaways from amateur golfers to help others enhance their game. By addressing common challenges faced by amateur golfers, such as aiming issues, golfers can work towards shaving strokes off their game and improving their overall performance on the course. Understanding the importance of proper aim and alignment in golf can lead to more consistent and accurate shots, ultimately leading to lower scores and a more enjoyable golfing experience. Incorporating tips and advice from top teachers, such as Jim Murphy, can help golfers refine their skills and elevate their game to the next level.
