Fried-egg lies in golf can be one of the worst situations you can find yourself in on the course. However, instead of getting discouraged when you encounter this tricky lie, there are some techniques you can employ to get out of it successfully. According to Derek Swoboda, a GOLF Teacher to Watch, one of the first things you should do when faced with a fried-egg lie is to resist the instinct to simply roll the ball out of the depression it made in the sand. Instead, Swoboda suggests making two adjustments to your setup and swing to effectively get out of this challenging situation.

To successfully navigate a fried-egg lie in a bunker, Swoboda recommends using your everyday bunker setup and swing with two key adjustments. The first adjustment involves “shutting down” the club by turning it inward so that the toe of the club points more toward the target than the clubface. The second adjustment is to emphasize steepness in your downswing and really go after the sand just behind the ball. By making these two adjustments and swinging hard, Swoboda suggests that you can effectively get out of a fried-egg lie as if by magic.

Derek Swoboda, who teaches at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Florida, is known for his expertise in helping golfers improve their game. As a GOLF Teacher to Watch, Swoboda’s tips and techniques for handling challenging lies like fried eggs in bunkers can be invaluable for golfers looking to improve their skills and lower their scores on the course. By following Swoboda’s advice and making the necessary adjustments to your setup and swing, you can increase your chances of successfully getting out of difficult lies like fried eggs and improving your overall performance on the golf course.
