Is a specialty pitching wedge a valuable addition to your golf bag? | Fully Equipped

During a recent trip to Carlsbad, the Fully Equipped team, which includes Wadeh Maroun, Kris McCormack, and a writer, each underwent a full bag fitting at the Titleist Performance Institute. Maroun, in particular, had an “Ahah” moment when it came to the bottom end of his bag, thanks to the addition of a Vokey SM10 46-degree pitching wedge. This club provides versatility for Maroun, allowing him to use it for a variety of shots ranging from 130 yards inwards. It acts as a utility club that can be used for knockdown shots, around the greens, and varying distances, opening Maroun’s eyes to new possibilities in his game.

McCormack, a fitter, was surprised by the result, as he typically doesn’t recommend specialty pitching wedges for amateur players. However, he acknowledges that everyone is different, and for Maroun, this club highlighted his scoring zone, providing versatility and additional options for different shots. The new 46-degree wedge isn’t replacing the pitching wedge in Maroun’s iron set but is instead going in the slot previously occupied by a 50-degree wedge, followed by a 54-degree sand wedge. The Vokey SM10 wedge is designed to offer maximum creativity, versatility, and consistency, catering to players of all levels.

The Vokey SM10 wedge features a progressive center of gravity throughout the lofts, optimizing ball flight, accuracy, and forgiveness. Spin Milled grooves are meticulously engineered to maximize spin and durability, with proprietary heat treatment doubling the groove’s durability without impacting feel. The 46-degree wedge is intended for shots from 125-130 yards inwards, offering pure feel and knockdown capabilities. While unconventional, Maroun sees this club as a utility wedge that can fulfill all his needs in that distance range, and he plans to test it out to see how it performs on the course.

While the idea of using a 46-degree wedge as a utility club may seem unconventional, it’s essential to experiment with different club configurations to find what works best for your game. Golf gear is highly customizable, and there are endless possibilities when it comes to filling out your bag. By getting a proper club fitting and trying out different clubs and setups, you can optimize your bag for your game and improve your performance on the course. Whether it’s adding specialty wedges or changing the configuration of your irons and woods, finding the right combination can make a significant difference in your game.
