The question of how hard to swing with your driver on the golf course is a common one among both amateur and professional golfers. To answer this question, the author decided to analyze the Power Percentage of various PGA Tour players during the 2022-23 season. Power Percentage measures the difference between a player’s fastest recorded ball speed and their average recorded ball speed, indicating how close they are to their maximum speed.

The top players on tour in terms of Power Percentage include elite ball-strikers like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, and Victor Hovland. These players consistently achieve high ball speeds while maintaining control over their shots. On the other hand, players in the lower ranks of Power Percentage typically have an average ball speed closer to 95 percent of their maximum.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is an interesting case, as his average ball speed is around 93 percent of his maximum. While this may seem low compared to other top players, it can be attributed to Scheffler’s ability to push himself to his limits when needed. Not every player with a lower Power Percentage lacks potential; mis-hits are a common factor in the loss of ball speed for many players.

For amateur golfers looking to improve their game, aiming for a Power Percentage of around 95 percent is a good benchmark. If you find that you are hitting the ball consistently but not achieving the distance you desire, increasing your Power Percentage by swinging harder may be beneficial. Conversely, if your Power Percentage is below 95 percent, focusing on hitting the sweet spot more consistently may yield better results.

Overall, analyzing your own Power Percentage can provide valuable insights into your swing and potential areas for improvement. By comparing your average ball speed to your maximum ball speed, you can determine whether you need to increase your swing speed or work on your consistency to optimize your performance on the golf course. Ultimately, finding the right balance between power and control is key to maximizing your potential as a golfer.
