Jake Knapp’s incredible performance at the Cognizant Classic made headlines as he secured the 15th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history. Knapp’s round of 59 was highlighted by 12 birdies, with a final birdie on the 18th green. What made his achievement even more impressive was the fact that he did so with two new clubs in his bag for the week. Knapp switched to a TaylorMade Qi35 driver, following two previous driver changes in recent events. Additionally, he also replaced his TaylorMade Spider putter with a Scotty Cameron Phantom 9.2 Circle T mallet putter for a new feel on the greens.

The decision to switch clubs paid off for Knapp, as he gained more than 2 shots both off the tee and with his putting during round 1 of the Cognizant Classic. His 2.2 strokes gained: off-the-tee was the highest in the field after the morning wave. Knapp explained that he made these changes not because he was putting poorly, but because he wanted to experiment with different feels based on his recent misses with the putter. The new Scotty Cameron putter features a plumber’s neck design, offering more toe hang compared to his previous putter with a double bend shaft.

In addition to his driver and putter changes, Knapp’s bag at the Cognizant Classic included a mix of PXG, TaylorMade, and Titleist equipment. His TaylorMade Qi35 driver was customized to 9@8.25 degrees, with a Fujikura Ventus TR Black wood shaft. This new shaft profile from Fujikura offers ultra-stiff tip and handle sections for players with fast swing speeds who prefer minimal flex during their swing. Knapp’s equipment choices and performance showcase the importance of finding the right feel and performance in golf clubs to optimize one’s game.

Knapp’s success with his new clubs raises questions about the impact of equipment changes on player performance. While some golfers may stick with familiar clubs for consistency, others like Knapp may benefit from making adjustments to improve their game. The combination of skill and equipment can play a significant role in a golfer’s success on the PGA Tour, as seen in Knapp’s sub-60 round. As technology continues to advance in golf equipment, players have more options to customize their clubs for optimal performance based on their individual preferences and playing style.

The buzz surrounding Knapp’s performance at the Cognizant Classic reflects the excitement and unpredictability of professional golf. Fans and analysts alike are always looking for the next breakthrough performance or record-breaking round, and Knapp’s achievement adds to the rich history of memorable moments on the PGA Tour. His 59 at PGA National’s Champion course stands as a testament to his talent and adaptability as a golfer, showcasing the potential for greatness when talent and equipment align.

As Knapp continues to compete on the PGA Tour, his equipment choices and performance will be closely monitored to see if his success with the new clubs is sustainable. Golfers at all levels can draw inspiration from Knapp’s willingness to make changes and experiment with different clubs to elevate his game. The lesson here is that being open to adjustments and trying new equipment can lead to breakthrough moments and improved performance on the golf course. With the right combination of skill, strategy, and equipment, players like Jake Knapp can continue to make their mark in the world of professional golf.
