Jason Perry, a former mini-tour golfer turned synthetic turf installer from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is making headlines by competing in the Senior British Open at Carnoustie in Scotland at the age of 50. This marks Perry’s first start on the PGA Tour Champions and his first time playing in a major championship. Despite having played in a PGA Tour event back in 1998, Perry admits to wasting his talent in the 1990s by not fully committing to his golf career. However, he managed to qualify for the Senior British Open by shooting an impressive 64 at Firestone Country Club’s Fazio Course in Ohio.

During his time on the Developmental Players Tour, Hooters Tour, and Teardrop Tour in the 1990s, Perry played alongside well-known players such as Heath Slocum and Boo Weekley. However, he acknowledges that he did not take full advantage of his opportunities back then. His last professional event was seven years ago when he qualified for the U.S. Open Final Qualifying. This will be Perry’s first time playing overseas and experiencing authentic links golf, which he describes as “hard” based on the YouTube videos he watched of Carnoustie.

In order to prepare for the Senior British Open, Perry has been balancing his work as a synthetic turf installer with practicing his golf game. As the owner of JP’s Custom Turf & Landscaping, Perry has been installing putting greens and landscape turf while also dedicating time to practice before traveling to Scotland. His dedication paid off when he qualified for Carnoustie alongside other amateur golfers like a former middle-school math teacher and a real estate loan officer from South Dakota.

Perry’s journey to the Senior British Open serves as a modern-day Tin Cup story, showcasing the resilience and determination of a golfer who never gave up on his dream. Despite facing challenges and setbacks throughout his career, Perry’s commitment to pursuing his passion for golf has led him to this prestigious event. As he prepares to compete against some of the best senior golfers in the world, Perry’s story is a reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of never giving up on one’s dreams.
