Jon Rahm advocates for LIV to host links event before upcoming Opens

Jon Rahm, a two-time major winner, recently expressed his desire to have a links event held prior to future Opens to help players better adjust to links golf courses. Rahm believes that playing on a links course the week before the Open can significantly improve a player’s performance. While PGA Tour and DP World Tour players have the opportunity to play in the Genesis Scottish Open before the British Open, Rahm wants to explore the possibility of a similar event for LIV Golf players in the future.

While Rahm acknowledged that a links event won’t happen in 2025, he believes it could be a valuable addition to LIV’s schedule in the future. He plans to discuss the idea with LIV’s management and other players on the tour to gauge their interest. Rahm believes that having key players on board would strengthen the proposal and increase the chances of a successful implementation.

The preparation of LIV golfers for the U.K. major could benefit from a links event prior to the Open. Despite the unique challenges presented by links courses, LIV players performed well at the recent British Open. Of the 18 LIV players who competed, 11 made the cut, with three finishing in the top 10. This success highlights the potential benefits of additional preparation on links courses.

Looking ahead to potential locations for a future LIV links event, Ireland emerges as a promising option. With the Scottish Open already serving as a precursor to the British Open, hosting a tournament in Ireland could provide LIV players with valuable links course experience. Rahm, a two-time winner of the Irish Open on links layouts, expressed his enthusiasm for the idea of a LIV event in Ireland.

Rahm’s desire to win an Open Championship is driven by both personal and sentimental reasons. As a Spanish golfer, Rahm recognizes the significance of becoming the first Spaniard since Seve Ballesteros to win the Open. The absence of a Spanish champion since 1988 adds to the motivation for Rahm, who aims to secure a third major title and move closer to completing a career grand slam.

Rahm’s track record at the Open Championship showcases his ability to contend on links courses. With several strong finishes at previous Opens, including a T-3 in 2021, Rahm is poised to make a serious bid for the claret jug in upcoming tournaments. His love for links golf and the unique challenges it presents further motivate Rahm to pursue success at the Open Championship.

In addition to his competitive drive, Rahm’s passion for the Open Championship extends to the Spanish golfing community. Winning the Open would not only be a personal achievement but also a source of pride for Spanish fans who have eagerly awaited another champion. With his proven skill on links courses and unwavering determination to succeed, Rahm remains a formidable contender for future Open Championships.
