Jon Rahm Withdraws from U.S. Open 2024 at Pinehurst Due to Foot Infection

Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the 2024 U.S. Open due to injury, citing an infected sore on his left foot. This comes after Rahm also pulled out of LIV Golf’s Houston event last weekend. The infection caused swelling and pain, leading Rahm to make the decision to withdraw for his long-term health. He announced the decision just hours after expressing uncertainty during a press conference at Pinehurst No. 2.

Rahm’s decision to withdraw is the latest development in a turbulent six months for the two-time major winner. Despite initially showing no interest in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit, Rahm signed with the organization last December. He is currently ranked second in LIV’s individual season standings but has yet to secure a win against limited fields. Rahm has also faced challenges in major tournaments this year, finishing T-45 at the Masters and missing the cut at the PGA Championship.

During his press conference, Rahm defended his performance, highlighting that he has been in contention and had chances to win in most tournaments despite a few setbacks. He remains positive about his career and past success, including his victory at the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Rahm also finished T-10 at last year’s U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club.

Following Rahm’s withdrawal, 24-year-old Jackson Suber will replace him in the 156-player field at the U.S. Open. Suber will play alongside Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama during the Thursday and Friday rounds. Rahm expressed disappointment about missing the championship but thanked the USGA staff, volunteers, and the Pinehurst community for hosting the event.

Rahm’s injury was described as a lesion on the skin between his pinky toe and the next toe, resulting in significant pain and discomfort. Despite efforts to control the infection and manage the pain, Rahm ultimately made the decision to prioritize his long-term health. He remains hopeful of returning to action soon and expressed gratitude to his peers and tournament organizers.

The sudden turn of events left Rahm’s fans and golf enthusiasts disappointed, especially considering his past success and potential to contend in major tournaments. However, injuries are a common occurrence in sports, and prioritizing health and well-being is essential for athletes to maintain a successful and sustainable career. As Rahm focuses on his recovery, the golfing community eagerly awaits his return to competitive play.
