Golf is a game that continuously evolves, but timeless advice often remains relevant. In our series "Timeless Tips," we delve into some of the best insights shared by leading teachers and players throughout the years. Today, we reflect on advice from Justin Rose featured in the November 2016 issue of GOLF Magazine, focusing on how to perform at your best when the stakes are high.

Justin Rose: A Testament to Resilience

Justin Rose has proven that age is simply a number in the world of professional golf. After a successful season featuring a FedEx Cup Playoff victory and a runner-up finish at the Masters, he opened 2026 with a commanding win at the Farmers Insurance Open. This victory marked Rose’s 13th title on the PGA Tour and positioned him at No. 3 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) — impressive feats for a 45-year-old.

While many athletes his age may consider winding down, Rose is thriving at the peak of his game. His illustrious career includes a U.S. Open trophy, an Olympic gold medal, and a former ranking as World No. 1.

In celebration of Rose’s remarkable performance, we spotlight the four critical strategies he shared on excelling under pressure.

Rose’s Four Keys to Playing Under Pressure

1. Build a Process
The most clutch moment of my career? Hitting a critical 4-iron into the 18th green to secure the 2013 U.S. Open title with Phil Mickelson in contention. In the past, I would have panicked in such a situation. Now, I focus solely on my pre-shot routine, or process, which is vital for maintaining confidence in the face of pressure.

  • Tip: Establish a consistent pre-shot routine, including shot visualization and club selection. This routine should be as integral to your shot as the physical swing itself.

2. Be a Planner
I’ve noticed a trend: my scores in the afternoon tend to be higher than in morning rounds. This is often due to a lack of routine. To combat nerves—especially before a post-lunch round—maintain your regular activities at a manageable pace.

  • Tip: Ensure you have ample time for a solid warm-up to avoid rushing, which can create tension and anxiety that interfere with your performance.

3. Find a Go-To Drive
In recent seasons, I’ve increased my distance off the tee, a feat not common for someone approaching mid-life. One effective strategy has been to harness ground-reaction forces for improved weight shift.

  • Tip: To enhance your driving distance, initiate your swing slowly, then build speed. A gradual acceleration helps maintain control.

4. Lean on Your Wedges
Previously ranking 171st in approach-shot proximity from 75 to 100 yards, I have transformed this weakness into a strength, ranking first two seasons ago.

  • Tip: Visualize your wedge swing as a clock face. Practice various backswing lengths to accumulate different yardages, allowing you to dictate distance with precision based on swing length and club loft.

Conclusion

By adopting these four essential strategies from Justin Rose, you can enhance your performance under pressure and improve your overall game. Remember, mastering the mental aspects of golf is just as crucial as developing physical skills. Embrace these techniques, and you’ll be well on your way to playing like a champion.
