The 2024 U.S. Adaptive Open took place at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas, where Kipp Popert and Bailey Bish emerged as the champions of the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. Popert, a 25-year-old from England, made history by winning the overall competition in the neurological impairment category for the second year in a row. His stellar performance included shooting 14 under par for the week, setting a new scoring record and finishing four shots ahead of Simon Lee, the 2022 champion. Bish, who also competed in the neurological impairment category, overcame a rough start to claim victory in the women’s division with a four-shot lead.

Popert’s journey to victory was highlighted by consistent play, with the Englishman shooting under par every day of the tournament. Despite a hiccup on the challenging par-5 10th hole, where he made a double bogey, Popert remained focused and retained his lead heading into the final stretch. His ability to thrive under pressure and bounce back from setbacks ultimately secured his back-to-back championship title. Bish, on the other hand, demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the tournament, rebounding from early struggles to secure her first major victory in adaptive golf.

The U.S. Adaptive Open featured a diverse field of players across eight impairment categories, ranging from intellectual impairment to vision impairment. Each category crowned a champion, with notable winners including Mike Browne in the lower limb impairment category and Issa Nlareb in the multiple limb amputee category. The tournament showcased the talent and determination of adaptive golfers, with players overcoming challenges and pushing themselves to excel on the course.

Bish’s victory symbolized the growth and recognition of adaptive golf within the larger golfing community, as she reflected on her journey from watching the tournament on TV to becoming a champion. Her ability to overcome obstacles and inspire others in the adaptive golf community highlighted the camaraderie and support present among players. The event not only celebrated individual victories but also showcased the collective spirit and resilience of adaptive golfers.

The U.S. Adaptive Open is one of 15 championships organized by the U.S. Golf Association, providing a platform for adaptive golfers to compete and showcase their skills. The tournament’s format, which includes different impairment categories and overall winners for men and women, exemplifies the inclusive and diverse nature of the sport. With each edition of the event, adaptive golf continues to gain recognition and support, creating opportunities for players to excel and inspire others with their achievements on the course.
