Lexi Thompson (68) leads KPMG Women’s PGA, denying retirement as the cause for her confident play

Lexi Thompson recently announced that this would be her final season of full-time play on the LPGA, sparking speculation about whether her decision had anything to do with her resurgence in form. Despite downplaying the idea that retirement was the key to her success, the 29-year-old has been playing some of her best golf in years. In the Meijer LPGA Classic, Thompson was topped by Lilia Vu in a three-way playoff, but she continued her stellar play with a four-under 68 in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship to take the outright lead after the first round of a major for the first time in her 13-year career.

Thompson attributed her recent success to finding something in her swing that allowed her to slow down her tempo and play more freely. She has hit an impressive 78.9 percent of greens in regulation over her last five rounds, significantly higher than her season average. Additionally, working with long-time friend Mark Wallington as her caddie has helped Thompson stay lighthearted and happy on the course, contributing to her positive mindset and performance.

Despite her struggles in recent majors, Thompson has shown resilience and determination in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, contending in a major for the first time since the 2022 Women’s PGA. Her strong ball striking and ability to stay in the moment have propelled her to the top of the leaderboard, with six birdies in her opening round. Thompson’s past experiences and setbacks in majors have only fueled her motivation to perform well and potentially claim another major title.

While Thompson’s retirement announcement has raised questions about whether she might reconsider if she were to win a big title, she remains focused on taking each day as it comes and enjoying the journey. Golf is a unpredictable game, and Thompson is maintaining a positive and open-minded attitude towards whatever opportunities may come her way. With her renewed confidence and improved performance, she is poised for success in the remaining events of her final full-time season on the LPGA tour.
