Sarah Schmelzel took the lead at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship after an impressive 5-under 67 in the second round. Her aggressive play off the tee resulted in six birdies, putting her at 6-under 138 for the tournament. Major champions like Jin Young Ko, Lexi Thompson, and Hinako Shibuno are close behind, trailing by only two strokes.

Growing up playing at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix, where she witnessed Annika Sorenstam carding the only 59 in LPGA history, Schmelzel has been inspired by the game since a young age. Her parents have been members of the club since the late ’90s, and Schmelzel’s passion for golf was fueled by watching Sorenstam compete and excel. This experience had a significant impact on her career and work ethic.

Despite her early success in the 2024 season with four top-8 finishes, Schmelzel experienced a dry spell with five missed cuts. She credits her swing coach, Chris Mayson, for not only improving her technical skills but also helping her mentally prepare for competitions. Mayson’s advice to relax and trust in her abilities has been crucial for Schmelzel’s recent success.

Seeking her first LPGA title, Schmelzel’s mindset going into the tournament was focused on perfection and what she needed to do to play well. With Mayson’s guidance, she was able to shift her mindset to one of relaxation and belief in her abilities. This change in approach has proven effective as she now leads the competition with a strong possibility of securing her first LPGA victory.

Schmelzel’s performance at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship showcases her talent and determination to succeed at the highest level of women’s golf. With the support of her coach, she has been able to overcome setbacks and refocus on her goals, leading to significant improvements in her game. Her aggressive play and skillful putting have set her apart from other competitors, positioning her as a strong contender for the championship title.

As the leader in the tournament, Schmelzel’s journey to the top reflects her dedication to the sport and her relentless pursuit of excellence. Her childhood experiences at Moon Valley Country Club and her admiration for Annika Sorenstam have shaped her career and inspired her to work hard and continue improving. With the support of her family, coach, and fans, Schmelzel is poised to make a lasting impact in women’s golf and potentially secure her first LPGA title at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
