LIV vs. PGA Tour: The 2025 U.S. Open Showdown

We’re now three majors into the 2025 golf season, and the battle between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour is still heating up. Honestly, it’s one of the most electrifying storylines you can keep track of in the world of professional golf.

At Augusta, Rory McIlroy finally snagged his first Masters title, completing an incredible career Grand Slam. Then at Quail Hollow, Scottie Scheffler turned up the heat, dominating and claiming his third major title. Just when you thought it couldn’t get more exciting, J.J. Spaun made waves by taking home the trophy at Oakmont for the U.S. Open.

So, how did both sides stack up in the 2025 U.S. Open? Let’s break it down!

LIV vs. PGA: The Numbers Are In

When we look at the numbers, it’s pretty intriguing. LIV Golf brought a smaller crew to the U.S. Open, with 14 players in the field. They managed to get about the same percentage of players making the cut as the PGA Tour, which had a whopping 142 players.

GroupPlayers in FieldMade Cut% Made CutTop 10sBest Finish
LIV Golf14642.9%3T4 – Hatton, Ortiz
PGA Tour1426042.3%7+1st – J.J. Spaun

LIV’s players might have been fewer in number, but they sure put in a solid showing. Although the trophy went to Spaun, we see that three LIV golfers crashed the top 10.

LIV’s Top Performers Shine

Speaking of the top 10, it was impressive to see three LIV golfers make the cut and land up there. Here’s who made the cut and showed up:

  • Tyrrell Hatton (T4, +3)
  • Carlos Ortiz (T4, +3)
  • Jon Rahm (T7, +4)

This matches their top 10 appearances from the PGA Championship. Even though they’ve yet to snag a win this year, it’s clear they’re in the mix.

Struggles of LIV’s Big Names

On the flip side, some of the bigger stars in the LIV Golf lineup just couldn’t find their groove. Bryson DeChambeau? He found himself out of the running, sitting at a +10 before the cut. Let’s just say the rough got a little rough for him, and some video footage proves it.

Here are the major names that missed the cut:

  • Bryson DeChambeau (+10, CUT)
  • Dustin Johnson (+10, CUT)
  • Cameron Smith (+8, CUT)
  • Phil Mickelson (+8, CUT)
  • Joaquin Niemann (+10, CUT)
  • Richard Bland (+18, CUT)

With some heavy hitters missing the cut, it’s tough for LIV to shake off that narrative.

Spaun Steals the Spotlight for the PGA

While LIV made some moves, the ultimate victory stayed with the PGA Tour as J.J. Spaun put on a show. He fought through a challenging final round, carding a gritty 72 to finish at 1-under, grabbing his first major title. The man outlasted the field and showed real strength against both LIV and his PGA Tour peers.

Reflecting on LIV’s Performance

This was, hands down, LIV’s best showing in the 2025 majors. However, even with some solid performances, the trophy and the top spots on the leaderboard still belonged to the PGA Tour.

Let’s take a look at the scorecard for the majors so far:

  • Masters: Tour win
  • PGA Championship: Tour win
  • U.S. Open: Tour win

The Final Shot at Royal Troon

The golf world is tuning in for the season’s grand finale at Royal Troon in Scotland from July 17 to 20. If LIV wants to flip the script and take home a major this year, this is their last shot in 2025.

Get ready to see how this story unfolds as we head into the next round! Will we witness a groundbreaking win for LIV? Or will the PGA Tour assert its dominance once again? Only time will tell!

In closing, the LIV vs. PGA story adds a whole new level of excitement to professional golf. Whether you’re rooting for the traditional powerhouse or cheering on the newcomers, there’s no denying that the tension and competition are higher than ever.

Stay tuned for more updates as the season continues!
