Fire Breaks Out at Historic West Essex Golf Club: A Community on Alert

On Monday afternoon, a significant fire broke out at the West Essex Golf Club, a historic James Braid-designed course located near Waltham Abbey. Over 60 firefighters from more than 10 nearby fire departments responded to the emergency, which began around 3 p.m. as the two-story clubhouse “erupted into flames.”

Quick Response and Safety Measures

The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service promptly confirmed that all individuals present were accounted for, ensuring that there were no injuries. A fire service spokesman stated, "Fire crews are working hard to prevent the fire from spreading to the rear of the building. An investigation will be carried out, when safe to do so, to find the cause of the fire."

Local authorities have cordoned off the area, urging residents to stay away for their safety. Thick black smoke was visible from miles away, with intense orange flames recorded on video, creating a dramatic scene that quickly captured community attention. Thankfully, reports have confirmed that the entire staff is safe.

About West Essex Golf Club

Founded in 1900, the West Essex Golf Club has been a cherished part of the golfing community. The 6,289-yard parkland course, affectionately known as “The West,” celebrated its 125th anniversary just last year. The clubhouse, opened in 1989 by Sir Michael Bonallack OBE—one of England’s most celebrated amateur golfers—holds a special place in the hearts of local golfers. Bonallack famously won the British Amateur Championship five times between 1961 and 1970.

Community Resilience

The fire at the West Essex Golf Club is a stark reminder of the challenges facing historical establishments. Members and locals alike are hopeful for a swift resolution and investigation into the cause of the fire. While it’s a tragic event, the quick response from fire crews has averted potential injuries and further damage.

Conclusion

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this incident, the West Essex Golf Club’s legacy remains intact. The focus will now shift to understanding the cause of the fire and beyond that, rebuilding efforts as the community comes together to support a beloved local institution.

Stay tuned for updates as further information becomes available.
