He sits eight shots behind clubhouse leader Francesco Molinari after a series of difficult shots, including a double-bogey seven on the 18th hole.
McIlroy’s Tough Finish
On his final hole, played as the ninth of his round, McIlroy faced significant trouble. His chip approach came up short, rolling back into the water. After incurring a penalty, he managed to leave his next shot just six feet from the pin but required two putts to finish the hole.
Fellow Competitors: A Mixed Bag
McIlroy’s playing partner, Tommy Fleetwood, also struggled, finishing with a score of 73. Fleetwood dropped strokes on the 14th, 16th, and the 18th holes, mirroring McIlroy’s performance.
Notable Performances from Ryder Cup Stars
In contrast, Tyrrell Hatton, another member of the Ryder Cup-winning team, began his title defense in impressive fashion with a 2-under par score of 70. His fellow teammate Shane Lowry matched that score, showcasing strong starts for both.

Clubhouse leader Francesco Molinari put on a show, finishing with an impressive 7-under par 65. He recorded eight birdies during his round, including four birdies in his first five holes after starting at the 10th. Molinari capped his round off with three consecutive birdies starting on the ninth hole.
