Nelly Korda Reflects on One Regret from Her Eventful Week at Chevron

Nelly Korda’s 2025 Chevron Championship Experience: A Title Defense Reflecting on Challenges and Growth

In April 2025, Nelly Korda, the reigning champion, returned to the Chevron Championship with much anticipation. It was a defining moment for Korda, who was eager to defend her title amidst the pressure of impressive past performances. The week kicked off with a lavish champions’ dinner celebrating her Czechoslovakian roots, featuring lavish dishes like $4,000 caviar. This event set the stage for an extraordinary tournament, though it would also highlight the challenges Korda faced.

Korda’s 2025 Chevron experience was anything but smooth sailing. Struggling on day one, she posted a disappointing five-over-par 77, placing her under significant pressure as she aimed to make the cut. By the end of the second round, Korda found herself far from her usually dominant form, which had included five consecutive tournament wins in the previous year. The stark contrast to her past success led to reflections on her preparation and strategy leading into the championship.

Despite the rocky start, Korda showed remarkable resilience. During her second round, she battled her way back, sinking six birdies in her last 11 holes to secure a position for the weekend rounds. By the end of the tournament, she finished tied for 14th place, five shots behind the eventual champion, Mao Saigo. This performance showcased her fighting spirit and ability to rebound, even when the odds seemed stacked against her.

After the final round, Korda candidly assessed her performance and the circumstances surrounding it. She attributed some of her struggles to a lack of preparation time. Having flown in from Los Angeles just days before the tournament, she was only able to get a brief look at the course under challenging conditions. Inclement weather periodically halted her practice, preventing her from fully acclimating to the course and honing her short game, particularly putting—a crucial component in any major championship.

The decision to focus on her rest instead of making the most of Wednesday’s afternoon practice could be seen as a tactical error. Korda expressed regret about not maximizing her opportunities to practice, especially given the new pro-am protocols that limited her ability to chip and putt during that crucial time. Reflecting on the experience, Korda highlighted the importance of adaptability and learning from setbacks.

Looking forward, Korda remains focused on her goals. Her stellar 2024 season raised expectations significantly; she clinched seven wins and was honored with multiple prestigious awards, including the Rolex Player of the Year. However, she now faces the challenge of reestablishing her form in 2025 as the LPGA season progresses. With four major tournaments on the horizon, Korda knows she must sharpen her skills and find her rhythm again.

In the immediate future, Korda plans to participate in the ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open leading up to the AIG Women’s Open. Importantly, she has made adjustments to her schedule to ensure a balanced approach, opting to forgo play the week before major events like the U.S. Women’s Open. This strategic decision reflects her commitment to enhancing her performance and preparing more effectively for critical championships.

As Korda gears up for the next events, the lessons learned from her Chevron experience will surely play a pivotal role. Emphasizing the need for focus, preparation, and mental resilience, Korda aims to leave behind the pressures of past accolades and concentrate on her growth as a competitor. Setting realistic goals and having a clear strategy will be integral to her success moving forward.

Korda’s journey at the 2025 Chevron Championship underscores the dynamic nature of professional golf—filled with highs, lows, and invaluable lessons. As she continues to navigate the demanding landscape of the LPGA tour, Korda remains an inspiring figure for aspiring golfers and fans alike. Her story is not just about titles and trophies but about perseverance, learning, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. As she prepares for her upcoming challenges, the golf community eagerly anticipates her next move and the potential for another remarkable season ahead.
