Old Rochester Golf Team Triumphs in 2025 Division 3 State Championship

The Old Rochester Regional High School golf team, coached by Chris Cabe, entered the 2025 season with modest expectations. After losing standout golfer Peter le Gassick, the 2024 Standard-Times Golfer of the Year, to graduation, Cabe was uncertain about how his remaining players would perform. Yet, with the return of two of the top four golfers from the previous year, hopes were cautiously optimistic.

Unexpected Success: A Season to Remember

To the delight of the coaching staff and fans alike, the Bulldogs exceeded all expectations by finishing the regular season with an impressive 15-0 record. Their remarkable consistency laid the groundwork for a successful postseason. Old Rochester showcased their talent and determination by sweeping through the South Coast Conference, the South Sectional, and ultimately clinching the Division 3 state championship.

In a thrilling match on October 27 at Blissful Meadows Golf Course in Uxbridge, the Bulldogs demonstrated their skill by defeating defending champion Ayer Shirley Regional by eight strokes. This victory marked Old Rochester’s second state title in four years, following their triumph in the Division 2 championship in 2022.

A Heartwarming Victory

"It’s a feeling like no other," said Coach Cabe, reflecting on the championship win. "We knew we had a good shot going into the tournament." The Bulldogs were fully aware of the challenges ahead, particularly the frigid October weather. At the time of their match, temperatures hovered around 35 degrees, adding an extra layer of difficulty to the already tricky greens, which were reported to be lightning-fast.

Yet, composure became their greatest ally. Cabe remarked on how well his players handled the pressure, showcasing their perseverance and teamwork throughout the day.

Individual Performances Shine

The contribution of each player was crucial to the team’s success. Jack Czerkowicz and Luke Pierre both delivered stellar performances, each carding a score of 77, which placed them tied for third in the tournament. Others, including Brady Mills with an 83 and John Bongiorno with an 86, also played pivotal roles in ensuring the team’s victory.

This camaraderie and collective effort highlight the unity and determination this group possesses, traits that were essential given the new competition they faced after moving from Division 2 to Division 3.

A New Challenge in Division 3

The transition to Division 3 presented its own challenges. Coach Cabe articulated the uncertainty that comes with facing "brand new teams." However, he also emphasized an essential truth: "Golf is golf. You have to play your ‘A’ game on that day." This mentality allowed Old Rochester to view each match as an opportunity to excel, regardless of their opponents.

Celebrations and Achievements

The triumph wasn’t just bittersweet for the players, but also for the coaching staff and school community. Athletic Director Chris Carrig expressed immense pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing how hard they worked throughout the season. "They were unrelenting out there on the links," Carrig said. His words encapsulated the dedication and tenacity of the Bulldogs, fostering a deep sense of community around their achievement.

South Sectional Championship Win

Before they could contend for state glory, Old Rochester had to prove their mettle at the South Sectional championship earlier this month. Competing against strong teams like St. John Paul II and Norwell, the Bulldogs soared to victory with a score of 318, solidifying their spot at the top.

Czerkowicz once again stood out, achieving the status of low medalist with a score of 76. Pierre also showed his caliber with a commendable 77, while Mills and August Hebert contributed with scores of 82 and 83, respectively. This series of impressive performances underscored the depth of talent on the Old Rochester team.

Coaches’ Commitment to Development

The successful season cannot solely be attributed to the talent on the course, as the coaching staff’s commitment to player development has also been vital. Coach Cabe consistently emphasizes teamwork and personal growth, values that have resonated deeply within the squad.

In addition to technical skills, the players honed their mental game, learning how to manage pressure and maintaining focus amidst challenging conditions. This comprehensive approach to training has fostered a resilient mindset within the team, enabling them to handle the demands of high-stakes competition.

The Future of Old Rochester Golf

Looking forward, the future seems bright for the Old Rochester golf program. With a blend of returning talent and possibly new recruits, the community is eager to see how this team will develop in the coming seasons.

Coach Cabe’s adeptness at fostering individual growth while maintaining a competitive edge has set the foundation for continued success. Whether upholding their championship title or building upon this year’s achievements, the Bulldogs are undoubtedly a team to watch.

In Conclusion

In a season filled with unexpected twists and turns, the Old Rochester Regional High School golf team rose to the occasion, showcasing their resilience, talent, and unwavering determination. From their immaculate regular-season record to an impressive performance in the postseason, the Bulldogs have left an indelible mark on their community and set a new standard for excellence in high school golf.

As they bask in the glow of their 2025 Division 3 state championship, there is no doubt that this group will remain committed to honing their skills and supporting one another, making their next season just as exciting. Whether the Bulldogs are on the course or back in the clubhouse, their bond as a team will undoubtedly propel them forward as they continue to strive for greatness in the world of high school golf.
