Once again, Lexi Thompson opts out of Amundi Evian Championship

Lexi Thompson will not be participating in this year’s Amundi Evian Championship, as she has not competed in the event since 2019. After announcing that the 2024 season will be her last full season on the tour, Thompson has posted three top-10 finishes in her recent tournaments. Despite losing in a playoff at the Meijer LPGA Classic and trailing by three in the final round at the KPMG Women’s PGA, Thompson managed to salvage a top-10 finish.

Following her rollercoaster round at the KPMG Women’s PGA, Thompson reflected on her performance, stating that it was a tale of two nines. Despite a shocking front-nine score, she was able to finish strong and secure an invitation back to the KPMG next year. Thompson will next be competing at the Dana Open in Sylvania, Ohio after a two-week break from tournament play.

Thompson has contended several times in the Evian Championship but has not returned to the event since making critical comments about the course on Instagram in 2019. She expressed frustration with the course, stating that good shots were not being rewarded. Despite removing the original post and clarifying her words, Thompson has chosen not to participate in the Evian Championship since then.

However, Thompson will be competing in the AIG Women’s British Open, the fifth and final major of the season, held at the Old Course at St. Andrews from August 22-25. Fans will have the opportunity to see her in action at this prestigious tournament. Thompson’s decision to skip the Evian Championship highlights the importance of course conditions and player preferences in tournament participation. While she has not returned to the event since her critical comments, Thompson continues to focus on her performance and competition in other tournaments on the LPGA tour.
