Rising Star: Sebastian Desoisa Shines at 2025 Preserve Golf Club Collegiate
CARMEL, California – In just three months since moving to the U.S., Oregon freshman Sebastian Desoisa has quickly made a name for himself in the competitive world of college golf. The young talent from Gibraltar is not only adapting to life in a new country but is also excelling on the golf course, showcasing his remarkable skills and vibrant personality.
Desoisa’s affinity for American golf is evident: “American golf suits my game,” he remarked. The differences in playing conditions between Europe and the U.S. have provided him with a new playground where the emphasis is often on power and precision. “In Europe, there are many links courses and the weather isn’t always favorable. Here, everything is perfect; it’s all about hitting bombs and making putts,” he added. This enthusiasm is reflective of his readiness to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
At the 2025 Preserve Golf Club Collegiate, Desoisa turned in two impressive rounds of 64 and 66, putting him at 14 under par and a substantial five strokes ahead of the competition entering the final round. While some players still had remaining holes to complete on Tuesday morning, Desoisa was firmly in command, demonstrating his potential to secure his first collegiate win. His stellar performance not only reflects his technical abilities but also hints at a promising college career.
The young golfer began his first round on hole No. 9 and demonstrated impressive composure, playing bogey-free until the 14th hole. Despite a rash of birdies—13 in total across 36 holes—his one and only bogey sparked no disappointment. “My game was just really good,” Desoisa stated confidently. He highlighted his iron play, which was “spot on,” landing him consistently close to the pins. This level of proficiency is crucial in competitive golf, where every stroke counts.
Desoisa is no stranger to leading the pack. Before joining the Oregon Ducks, he honed his skills on the European amateur circuit, clinching prestigious titles like the Triple A European Masters and the U18 Spanish National Championship. He even represented England at the Junior World Cup. These achievements lay the groundwork for his promising future in golf. “I’ve played in significant amateur events in Europe, but transitioning to college golf is a big step,” he acknowledged. “The courses here and the play around the greens are reminiscent of what you see on the PGA Tour.”
While the transition from links-style golf to America’s more modern layouts presents its challenges, Desoisa finds solace and support from the Oregon golf program. “Eugene is a cool place. The program is fantastic, and the people are incredibly welcoming. I’m really enjoying my time here. I feel like I made the right choice by coming to Oregon,” he expressed.
Sebastian’s introduction to golf began in a typical manner; his father introduced him to the sport with plastic clubs when he was just a child. “The rest was history,” he fondly remarked. Although now residing nearly 6,000 miles away, he often reminisces about his time in Gibraltar with his family, especially the moments spent playing at La Hacienda Golf Links in southern Spain with his dad.
As he stood on the precipice of a significant achievement in the collegiate arena, Desoisa remained focused and grounded. “I don’t even know where I am on the leaderboard yet,” he admitted later in the evening. “I just played well today; I need to keep that momentum going.” His apparent lack of interest in leaderboard numbers showcases a mature mindset that prioritizes consistency in performance above all else.
While Desoisa was carving his path, the competition didn’t fall short either. The No. 25 BYU team topped the leaderboard, sitting at 26 under par—a testament to their skill as they continue to push through their rounds. With three players positioned in the top 10 and Simon Kwan leading the charge for BYU at an impressive 9 under par, the final round promised thrilling golf action.
As Eugene welcomes Desoisa into its golfing community, fans and fellow players alike can only anticipate greater feats from this young golfer. Stay tuned as he navigates the final round of the 2025 Preserve Golf Club Collegiate—will he secure his first collegiate victory and establish even more of a foothold in American golf? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Sebastian Desoisa is a name to watch in the future of college golf.
