Sonja Tang, a golfer from Vancouver, Canada, transferred from the University of British Columbia to Oregon to pursue her dream of playing at a Division I school. Despite being a walk-on without a scholarship, Tang’s determination and drive to succeed impressed Oregon coach Derek Radley. She was the first Oregon player to tee off at the 2024 ANNIKA Intercollegiate tournament, winning her spot in the lineup through a rare qualifier victory for a walk-on.

Though Tang struggled on the back nine, her highlight was a birdie on the 18th hole. Oregon’s qualifying process allowed Tang to earn a spot in the season-opening event, with her impressive finish securing her place in the lineup. Her teammates showed support and excitement for Tang, celebrating her opportunity to compete in the tournament.

Oregon currently sits in fifth place as a team after the opening round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, trailing co-leaders Wake Forest and South Carolina, the defending champions. Duke sophomore Katie Li leads the individual standings after firing a 6-under 66 in the opening round.

The winning team at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate will earn an exemption into the LPGA’s The ANNIKA tournament in November. Tang’s journey as a walk-on at Oregon showcases her determination and passion for the game, despite facing challenges along the way. Her positive attitude and dedication to improvement have earned her a place in the lineup and the support of her teammates.

As Tang continues to pursue her dream of playing at a Division I school, her performance at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate demonstrates her ability to compete at a high level. With the support of her coach and teammates, Tang remains focused on getting better each day and making a positive impact on the Oregon golf team.

The opportunity to compete in the ANNIKA Intercollegiate and potentially earn an exemption into The ANNIKA tournament provides Tang with additional motivation to continue working towards her goals. Her journey from a walk-on at Oregon to competing in a prestigious tournament highlights the importance of perseverance and dedication in pursuing one’s dreams.

Tang’s experience at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate serves as inspiration for aspiring golfers and athletes, showcasing the rewards that come from hard work and determination. As she navigates the challenges of collegiate golf and pursues her Division I dreams, Tang’s story resonates with those who strive to overcome obstacles and achieve success in their chosen field.
