Many of LIV Golf’s top players, including Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Adrian Meronk, and Carlos Ortiz, are participating in the Asian Tour’s International Series Macau Event, not for the prize money but for a chance to play their way into the Open Championship at Royal Portrush. The Macau event is part of the R&A Qualifying Series, offering spots in the 153rd Open to the top three finishers not already exempt for the championship. Players like Garcia and Reed view this as an important opportunity to qualify for the Open Championship, with Garcia expressing his excitement for the chance to be back in his favorite major after not playing in it for the past couple of years. Reed also emphasizes the motivation and drive players feel when given the opportunity to qualify for major events.

After the third round of the Macau event, Reed and Ortiz are tied at the top at 16 under, with Jason Kokrak tied for third at 13 under and Garcia six strokes behind Reed and three strokes behind third place. Both Reed and Garcia have missed certain major events in recent years, making the opportunity to qualify for the Open Championship even more significant for them. With the R&A unveiling an exemption for the top player in the LIV Golf individual rankings who has not already qualified following the LIV Dallas event in late June, Garcia currently holds the third spot in the rankings after his win at LIV Hong Kong. However, he faces competition from other players close behind in the standings, such as Sebastian Munoz and David Puig, as the major season progresses.

Garcia’s performance in the Macau event and subsequent events will be crucial in securing his exemption for the Open Championship. With Reed and Ortiz positioned to potentially secure two of the three exemptions available, Garcia will need to outperform players like Kokrak, Dominic Foos, and Lucas Herbert to earn his spot back in the major championship. The importance of consistent good golf leading up to the R&A’s cut-off date cannot be overstated for players like Garcia who are vying for a chance to compete in prestigious events like the Open Championship. A strong performance in Macau and future events will be essential for Garcia to secure his place in the major tournament.

Josh Schrock, a writer and reporter for Golf.com, highlights the significance of the Macau event for players like Garcia and Reed who are aiming to qualify for the Open Championship through the R&A Qualifying Series. Garcia, in particular, expresses his enthusiasm for the opportunity to participate in his favorite major after missing out on it in recent years. Josh Schrock’s coverage of the event emphasizes the competitive nature of the qualifying process and the determination of players like Garcia to earn their spots in prestigious tournaments. As the competition unfolds in Macau and beyond, the pressure will be on players like Garcia to deliver strong performances and secure their exemptions for the Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
