Louisville is the center stage for golfer Andy Ogletree as he makes his first major championship appearance in over three years, thanks to a breakthrough professional performance on the Asian Tour International Series. His coach, Tony Ruggiero, played a crucial role in preparing Ogletree for the Valhalla course by focusing on technical aspects of his swing before they arrived in Louisville. This included working on getting a better turn into his right hip on the backswing and ensuring he turns his torso on the downswing, which helped him improve his driving accuracy.

After finding a driver that suited his eye and making these swing adjustments, Ogletree’s game began to show marked improvement. He worked on identifying the ideal ball flight lines off each tee during practice rounds with Mickelson and Rahm, focusing on starting the ball with a hint of drop fade. Ruggiero emphasized the importance of aligning his feet and shoulders correctly to ensure he executed his preferred shots confidently.

Ogletree also honed his short game skills by practicing hitting square-faced shots around the greens, learning where to aim based on the lie and increasing the effective size of the green by strategically choosing his landing spots. Additionally, he received valuable advice from Mickelson and Rahm on approaching challenging holes like the 17th at Valhalla, understanding that it’s okay to accept a higher score on difficult holes and focus on strategic play rather than being a hero.

Ruggiero’s guidance extended to helping Ogletree navigate the nuances of the Valhalla course, particularly the complex lies featuring a mix of bluegrass and broad-leafed zoysia grass. By understanding where to aim and how to play these unique lies, Ogletree gained confidence in his ability to handle any situation on the course. This level-setting approach helped Ogletree approach the tournament with a clear strategy, focusing on consistency and smart play rather than taking unnecessary risks.

As Ogletree continues his journey in the PGA and on LIV as a member of Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers, his experience at Valhalla showcases his dedication to improving his game and adapting to new challenges. With Ruggiero’s expert guidance and insights, Ogletree was able to fine-tune his swing, increase his driving accuracy, and develop a strategic approach to the demanding course conditions. This opportunity to compete in a major championship after a significant hiatus marks a milestone in Ogletree’s professional career and highlights his potential as a rising star in the world of golf.
