PGA Tour regular-season finale first round postponed due to storm, intensifying an already hectic week

The Wyndham Championship, one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the golf calendar, had to delay its official start due to heavy rains caused by Tropical Storm Debby passing through North Carolina. The PGA Tour announced the postponement late Thursday morning, citing unplayable conditions at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The tournament has traditionally served as the regular season finale, with players vying for positions as the FedEx Cup playoffs draw near.

Originally, play was slated to start in the afternoon, but worsening weather conditions prompted a postponement until Friday. PGA Tour chief referee Ken Tackett was optimistic that the tournament could still conclude by Monday at the latest, considering the favorable forecast for the weekend. There were even discussions about the possibility of playing 36 holes on Sunday if needed to stay on schedule.

However, the forecast predicted continuous rain throughout Thursday and Friday morning, potentially clearing up in the later afternoon. While Sedgefield Country Club boasts efficient drainage systems, the sheer volume of expected rain posed challenges to starting the tournament on time. Yet, the forecast for Friday suggested less rainfall, raising hopes for a Sunday finish if conditions allowed.

The stakes are high in Greensboro this weekend, as the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will advance to the tour’s postseason, starting in Memphis the following week. Despite the delay, players remained eager to compete and showcase their skills on the course. Fans were left anticipating an exciting tournament once the weather cleared, and the competition got underway. Ultimately, the postponement added a layer of suspense and excitement to the already intense atmosphere surrounding the Wyndham Championship.
