The Olympics Men’s Golf competition in Paris saw some dramatic finishes, with Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy all falling short in the final round. Rahm went from leading by four strokes to finishing off the podium after a collapse on the last few holes. Schauffele, who had a strong summer with two major wins, also struggled in the final round, finishing seven shots back. McIlroy, aiming for redemption after his U.S. Open heartbreak, saw his chances disappear with a costly shot into the water.

Despite the disappointments of the top players, the focus was on Tom Kim, who was playing for more than just a medal. In South Korea, male athletes over the age of 19 are required to serve in the military for a period of time unless they earn an exemption, such as winning an Olympic medal. Kim and his teammate Ben An were hoping to secure this exemption through their performance in the Olympics. Kim’s emotional reaction after finishing 8th showed the significance of the moment for him.

The pressure of the looming military service was evident in Kim’s struggles early in the season, where he failed to secure any top-10 finishes before the Olympic qualification cutoff. Despite the weight of the situation, Kim found himself in contention during the final round, with a chance to secure a medal. However, a water ball on the 18th hole dashed his hopes of a podium finish, leaving him with mixed emotions after the round.

The significance of the military exemption was not the driving force behind Kim’s performance, as he stated that his focus was on representing his country rather than personal gain. His friendship with Scottie Scheffler, who ultimately won the gold medal, added a personal connection to the competition. Scheffler’s words of encouragement after the round reflected the bond they shared as competitors and friends.

The history of Korean golfers facing mandatory military service, such as Sangmoon Bae, who saw a decline in his career after serving, added to the pressure facing Kim and An. With limited opportunities to earn exemptions, the Olympics presented a crucial moment for Kim to secure his future in the sport without the interruption of military service. Despite falling short of this goal, Kim’s determination and emotional response showcased his dedication to his country and his sport.

Overall, the Olympics Men’s Golf competition in Paris was a mix of triumph and heartbreak for the players involved. While the top contenders faced disappointing finishes, the story of Tom Kim and his quest for a military exemption added depth and emotion to the event. The pressure to perform under such circumstances highlighted the challenges facing athletes from certain countries and the moments of resilience and courage that define their journeys in the sport.
