Sedge Valley at Sand Valley in Wisconsin is a unique golf course that challenges the traditional notion that longer courses are better. This par-68 layout stretches out to just 5,829 yards, much shorter than many modern courses, but that was never the point for architect Tom Doak. Inspired by his experiences in Scotland, where shorter courses were appreciated for their quality, Doak focused on building the best holes possible on the available land without excessive earth moving. The result is a course with challenging greens and a fun style of play that emphasizes strategy.

The course has been rated across various categories, including the integration of design elements with the natural landscape, the quality of putting surfaces and greenside areas, and the variety of holes in terms of length and difficulty. Sedge Valley excels in many of these areas, with standout features such as the three-tiered green on the fifth hole and the split-level fairway on the 18th. The course offers a range of challenges, from centerline bunkers that force strategic decisions on tee shots to greens that demand precision and finesse. Despite being less than 6,000 yards long, Sedge Valley provides plenty of variety and interest for players of all skill levels.

On the aesthetic side, Sedge Valley integrates seamlessly with the natural surroundings, with stands of trees and sandy dunes providing a picturesque backdrop for the course. The maintenance and upkeep of the course have also been exceptional, with fescue grass offering firm and bouncy fairways and the native vegetation adding to the overall visual appeal. The course’s sustainability efforts are evident in the design and maintenance, creating a harmonious balance between playability and environmental conservation.

Overall, Sedge Valley offers a different kind of golfing experience, one that emphasizes the beauty of the land and the strategic challenges of the game. With its compact layout and emphasis on quality over quantity, the course stands out as a refreshing departure from the trend of longer and more difficult modern courses. It’s a testament to Tom Doak’s vision and creativity as an architect, and a welcome addition to the diverse golf offerings at Sand Valley resort. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer looking for a new challenge or a casual player seeking a fun and engaging round, Sedge Valley is sure to provide a memorable experience on the links.
