Mizuno has long been known for producing top-quality irons, particularly in the blade and low-handicap market. However, with the introduction of the JPX franchise, Mizuno has made their irons more accessible to a wider range of players. One of the latest iterations of this family is the Mizuno JPX925 Hot Metal HL irons.
The technology behind the Hot Metal HL irons is similar to the standard JPX925 model, with all of the same design elements but presented in a more user-friendly package. This includes a longer blade length, thicker top line, and more offset, making it ideal for high-handicap players. Despite being chunkier than low-handicap irons, they still inspire confidence in players.
The Hot Metal HL irons may not be the most visually appealing from a shelf standpoint, with a somewhat busy design and a combination of chrome and satin finishes. However, the new higher toe and low heel profile add a modern touch to the overall look. In terms of performance, the irons deliver on their promise, offering good launch, spin, and carry numbers, making them a solid choice for mid-high handicap players.
During testing at Saunton Golf Club using a launch monitor and TaylorMade TP5 golf balls, the Hot Metal HL irons performed well, providing solid data and inspiring confidence in the player. Unlike the standard and Pro models in the range, the HL model did not exhibit any ‘flier’ style ball flights, which is a positive aspect for players looking for consistency in their shots.
The sound and feel of the Hot Metal HL irons stood out during testing, offering a lively yet not firm impact with no sense of clickiness. The turf interaction was also excellent, with the contoured sole gliding smoothly through the turf. The Mizuno JPX925 Hot Metal HL irons will be available in a 4-SW set for right-handers, with a stock shaft offering of Nippon NS Pro 950 NEO in steel and UST Recoil Dart ESX in graphite. The stock grip is a Lamkin UT+ and they are priced at $150/£150 per iron.
