Review of the Takomo 101 Irons by Plugged In Golf

Takomo Golf has introduced a new set of irons, the Takomo 101 irons, designed for beginners and improving players. Priced at $459 for a set from 4-PW, these clubs offer distance and forgiveness in a hollow-bodied design that is budget-friendly. While not suitable for every player, the 101 irons are a great option for those looking to enhance their game without breaking the bank.

The Takomo 101 irons feature a modern aesthetic with a chromed-out look and understated logo. The clubs have a thicker sole and top line, instilling confidence in beginner players or those seeking improvement. While not the most sleek profile, the clubs look relatively compact behind the ball, providing a sense of assurance for the golfer.

In terms of sound and feel, the Takomo 101 irons offer a firmer feel compared to the forged S20C steel of the 201 irons and Skyforger wedges from Takomo. The sound produced is a distinct “click” off the clubface, which may not be to everyone’s liking. However, for golfers who prioritize forgiveness and distance, the 101 irons deliver on performance.

The Takomo 101 irons are touted for their forgiveness and distance capabilities. They are higher launching and farther flying compared to the 201 irons, with increased forgiveness on mishits. The clubs exhibit lower spin and stronger loft, resulting in straighter shots closer to the centerline. Despite noticeable differences in mishits, total distances remain consistent with well-struck shots.

One notable feature of the Takomo 101 irons is the significant amount of offset in most of the iron set. This design element may benefit golfers who struggle with a slice or right misses, helping to correct those issues. While the 101 irons lean towards game improvement, even low-handicappers may appreciate certain aspects of these clubs. The 4-iron, in particular, stands out for its performance.

Overall, the Takomo 101 irons are marketed towards beginner golfers, but they offer value and performance that extend to a wider range of players. The forgiving design, coupled with the hollow-bodied construction, makes these clubs suitable for young or aging golfers seeking more distance and forgiveness. Despite not delivering the same soft feel as other Takomo clubs, the 101 irons are a reliable option that won’t disappoint their intended audience.
