Rory McIlroy defends caddie Harry Diamond against criticism from Hank Haney and others

Rory McIlroy has heard the criticism directed at his caddie and friend, Harry Diamond, but isn’t having it. Diamond has been looping professionally for McIlroy since 2017, with the relationship between the two going back to childhood. Diamond was also the best man at McIlroy’s wedding in 2018. McIlroy often credits Diamond for creating a comfortable working environment between the two. Despite their successful partnership, some have questioned whether Diamond is holding McIlroy back from reaching his full potential, especially after his last major win in 2014.

After the recent U.S. Open, criticism towards Diamond escalated, with Hank Haney and NBC Sports analyst Smylie Kaufman blaming him for McIlroy’s shortcomings. Kaufman specifically pointed out a moment during the tournament where Diamond allegedly didn’t provide the right club, resulting in McIlroy missing out on an opportunity to take control of the championship. Haney suggested an experienced caddie like Stevie Williams wouldn’t let McIlroy make such mistakes. McIlroy, however, defended Diamond, calling the criticism unfair and pointing out that Diamond’s contributions are often overlooked when they are successful.

McIlroy addressed the criticism against Diamond, highlighting that those who criticize Diamond are not in the position to see everything that happens on the course. He emphasized that Diamond is a vital part of his team and plays a significant role in his success. McIlroy expressed disappointment in the lack of recognition Diamond receives when they win, compared to the criticism he faces when they don’t. Despite the backlash, McIlroy is confident in his decisions and trusts Diamond’s expertise and support as his caddie.

The defending champ at the Scottish Open, McIlroy is set to participate in this prestigious event with Viktor Hovland and Robert MacIntyre. McIlroy’s strong bond with Diamond goes beyond golf, and he firmly believes in their partnership on and off the course. McIlroy’s defense of Diamond showcases the trust and camaraderie they have built over the years. The duo’s success together speaks volumes about Diamond’s contributions to McIlroy’s career and achievements. As McIlroy continues to strive for excellence in his professional endeavors, Diamond remains by his side, providing support and guidance every step of the way.
