Rory McIlroy encountered a setback in his quest for his 18th DP World Tour victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. Despite a strong start to Round 3, McIlroy’s round was derailed by a brutal double-bogey on the 18th hole. This double-bogey dropped McIlroy to T13 at 13 under par, five shots behind the leader, Paul Waring. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time McIlroy had a late-round mishap, as a similar incident occurred in the previous round.

During the second round, McIlroy was seven under through 16 holes before a triple-bogey on the 17th hole. This setback was frustrating for McIlroy, who had been in a good position on the leaderboard. Despite these challenges, McIlroy remained hopeful for a potential Sunday charge to get back into contention. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship has seen low scores, with players like Waring, Fleetwood, and Detry posting impressive rounds in earlier stages of the tournament.

McIlroy expressed disappointment in his performance on the final two holes in two consecutive rounds, citing them as costly mistakes that impacted his position on the leaderboard. Despite these setbacks, McIlroy recognized that the leaders weren’t running away with the tournament, giving him hope for a possible comeback on the final day of competition. The unpredictable nature of golf presents an opportunity for McIlroy to make up ground if he can put together a strong round on Sunday.

The ability to score well at Yas Links has been demonstrated by several players throughout the tournament, with impressive rounds highlighting the quality of play at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. With the final round approaching, McIlroy remains optimistic about his chances and the potential for a turnaround in his performance. Golf fans can catch all the action from the championship’s final round on Golf Channel, starting at 1:30 a.m. ET on Sunday. Despite the challenges faced by McIlroy, the competitive nature of the sport leaves room for unexpected outcomes and exciting finishes.
