The historic Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island, New York, has been chosen by the USGA to host both the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open in 2036, with the tournaments being held only a week apart. This decision follows the success of Pinehurst No. 2, which hosted both championships in 2014 and is set to do so again in 2029. It will be the first time the women will compete for a major title at Shinnecock, adding to the course’s rich USGA history.

The men will return to Shinnecock for their sixth U.S. Open in 2026 and again in 2036, which will mark the 140th anniversary of the first U.S. Open held at the club. The USGA’s chief championships officer, John Bodenhamer, expressed excitement for the opportunity to showcase the game’s best players on such an iconic course in back-to-back weeks. Shinnecock’s club president, Brett Pickett, highlighted the club’s history of inclusivity, noting that Shinnecock was the first golf club in America to welcome women members in 1891.

As one of the founding members of the USGA and the oldest incorporated golf club in the United States, Shinnecock has a long-standing relationship with the organization. However, only one women’s event has been held at the club, the 1900 U.S. Women’s Amateur. The decision to host both the men’s and women’s championships at Shinnecock in 2036 reflects a commitment to showcasing the talents of players from both genders on a prestigious stage.

The most recent U.S. Open held at Shinnecock in 2018 was won by Brooks Koepka, further solidifying the course’s reputation as a challenging but fair test of golf. With its rolling terrain, strategic bunkering, and iconic views of the surrounding area, Shinnecock provides a unique setting for major championships. The decision to bring the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open to Shinnecock in 2036 underscores the club’s enduring legacy in American golf history.

Fans and players alike can look forward to witnessing history being made at Shinnecock in 2036, as the world’s best golfers compete for national championships on the same course just a week apart. The USGA’s commitment to showcasing both men’s and women’s golf on equal footing reinforces the organization’s dedication to growing the game and providing opportunities for players of all backgrounds. Shinnecock’s role in this historic event will further cement its status as a cornerstone of American golf and a fitting venue for championship golf at its highest level.
