Straighten out your slice with Johnny Miller’s proven setup technique

Johnny Miller, a legendary golfer known for his 25 PGA Tour victories, brilliant ball-striking, and on-course style, had a deep understanding of the golf swing mechanics that rivaled some of the best instructors in the game. Even before becoming a TV analyst, Miller had a keen eye for observing great golfers to understand what made them successful in their swings. This knowledge helped him secure eight PGA Tour victories in 1974 and earn the PGA Player of the Year award.

Miller’s confidence in his swing stemmed from his understanding of his mechanics, preventing him from falling into slumps by quickly identifying and correcting any issues. One of Miller’s key swing advice was making a good lateral shift towards the target on the downswing, a move that he believes stems from a proper setup position. According to Miller, setting up slightly left of the target allows for an aggressive lateral move through the ball, preventing compensations like an over-the-top move on the downswing.

Aligning the body slightly left of the target may feel unconventional for many golfers who often set up to the right, leading to compensatory movements to correct the ball’s path. Miller emphasized the importance of a correct setup in producing consistently good shots, even with less-than-perfect swings. By lining up left, golfers can avoid coming over the top and instead promote a smooth lateral shift through the ball, similar to what legendary golfer Lee Trevino does in his swing.

Miller’s advice serves as a simple yet effective fix for golfers struggling with an over-the-top swing, providing insights from one of the game’s greatest players. By understanding the importance of a proper setup and making a lateral shift towards the target, golfers can improve their swing mechanics and produce more accurate shots on the course.
