The highly anticipated mixed-reality golf league, TGL, founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, has finally announced its schedule, set to begin on January 7 on ESPN in primetime. The first matchup will feature teams from New York Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club. Woods and McIlroy will be making appearances in the second and third weeks of TGL respectively. The purposeful TV schedule aims to attract viewership from football fans in January and offers a unique viewing experience unlike anything seen before in the sport.
The matches will all take place at the purpose-built SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, with 65% of the matches scheduled to air on ESPN, including all of Tiger Woods’ matches. The scheduling process was challenging due to the players’ existing commitments to full-reality golf schedules, and the league aims to complete all matches before the first major championship of the year, The Masters, in early April. This will require maximizing the PGA Tour visits to Florida in February.
The league’s biggest day is set for Presidents Day on February 17, with a triple-header featuring matches involving Justin Thomas’ team and The Bay GC. This day showcases the busy schedules of the players, including potential back-to-back events like the Genesis Invitational in LA and the Mexico Open. The TGL season schedule includes matches slated till the final series in March, with the semifinals and finals set to take place later in the month.
For golf fans interested in seeing the action live, tickets to the SoFi Center will be available for purchase, starting at $160 for a single match. The indoor venue, likened to the size of a football field, can accommodate up to 1,500 fans, providing an intimate viewing experience. Tickets will go on sale to the public on October 29, with a presale option available on October 28. This offers fans the chance to witness the groundbreaking mixed-reality golf league up close and personal.
Overall, the TGL’s innovative approach to the golfing world, bringing together virtual and physical elements, is set to create a new and exciting viewing experience for fans. With a star-studded lineup and strategic TV schedule, the league aims to capture a broad audience, leveraging on the popularity of ESPN broadcasts in January. As the first of its kind in the sport, TGL promises to revolutionize the way golf is consumed and enjoyed, offering a blend of technology and athleticism that is sure to captivate audiences worldwide.
