Rory McIlroy once faced a major challenge during the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando when he realized he needed his old golf clubs from Jupiter, over 150 miles away. In a stroke of luck, an Uber driver known as “Aquaman” was able to help him out by delivering the clubs in time for McIlroy to use them for the final round. The driver, who lives in Palm Beach and has been driving for Uber for about three and a half years, took on the task with dedication and understood the importance of the mission. Despite not being a golfer himself, Aquaman knew the gravity of the situation and was eager to assist.
High-level golfers like McIlroy are known to be fiercely loyal to their clubs, with some using the same gear for years. Changing equipment can be a difficult decision, as players often have a strong attachment to their clubs. McIlroy’s decision to switch back to his old woods for the final round of the tournament proved to be beneficial, as he felt more comfortable with the setup. Aquaman loaded McIlroy’s clubs into his car and made the nearly three-hour journey to Bay Hill, where he handed the clubs over to McIlroy personally. The golfer showed his appreciation by tipping Aquaman generously after the successful delivery.
McIlroy’s decision to switch back to his old clubs had a positive impact on his performance at the Players Championship, where he played exceptionally well with his familiar gear. While the clubs may not have been the sole reason for his success, they certainly played a part in his victory at Sawgrass. Aquaman, who has since become a minor celebrity for his role in helping McIlroy, feels lucky and happy to have played a small part in getting McIlroy back on track. Despite not taking a photo with the golfer to commemorate the experience, Aquaman has one heck of a story to tell about his unexpected adventure.
