GOLF recently released its latest ranking of the Top 100 Courses in the U.S. (2024-25), which includes 11 newcomers, one of which is The Lido located in Rome, Wisconsin. The Lido, originally opened in 1917 on Long Island’s South Shore, was designed by legendary golf architects C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor. Despite meeting an unfortunate fate in the 1940s, the course received high praise from renowned golf writer Bernard Darwin, who considered it the best course in the world for giants. Nearly eight decades later, Michael and Chris Keiser decided to recreate The Lido next to their Sand Valley Resort, with the help of architect Tom Doak and Brian Schneider. Utilizing vintage photos of the original course and modern technology, the new Lido was modeled with great precision and attention to detail.

The process of rebuilding The Lido involved careful planning and meticulous construction, with Doak and Schneider spending more than 230 days on-site to ensure the accuracy of the course layout. The design includes all the great template holes such as the Alps and Redan, making it a strategic marvel for golfers. The scale of the course, depth of hazards, and large greens averaging over 12,000 square feet make The Lido a challenging and visually stunning golf destination. Panelist Clyde Johnson describes The Lido as the “ultimate IQ test for golf-course architecture,” highlighting the intricate design and thoughtfulness required to navigate the course successfully.

The Lido is considered a unique and demanding course that challenges golfers of all skill levels. With its reincarnation of the most difficult course in the world, The Lido offers outstanding features in extreme iterations, catering to players seeking a true test of their abilities. The course’s Macdonald traits, including classic template holes like the Redan, Alps, Cape, Biarritz, and Punchbowl 12th hole, provide a mind-blowing experience for those who appreciate the intricacies of golf course design. Playing The Lido requires careful study, planning, and strategic decision-making, reminiscent of iconic courses like the Old Course in St. Andrews.

The resurrection of The Lido at Sand Valley Resort showcases a commitment to preserving and honoring golf’s rich architectural history. By recreating this iconic course with modern techniques and a deep understanding of its original design, The Lido has become a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts looking to experience a piece of golfing history. The meticulous attention to detail in bringing The Lido back to life reflects the dedication and passion of the Keiser family and the design team behind its revival. With its challenging layout, impressive greens, and homage to timeless golf design principles, The Lido stands out as a top contender in the world of golf course rankings and a shining example of architectural excellence.

In conclusion, The Lido’s reincarnation at Sand Valley Resort in Wisconsin represents a significant milestone in the world of golf course architecture and design. By resurrecting this iconic course with precision, authenticity, and reverence for its original creators, The Lido has captured the hearts of golfers and critics alike. The strategic challenges, impressive scale, and historical significance of The Lido make it a standout addition to the Top 100 Courses in the U.S. ranking. With its meticulous recreation and dedication to preserving the legacy of C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor’s masterpiece, The Lido at Sand Valley Resort is a must-visit destination for golfers seeking a truly unique and memorable experience.
