The often overlooked but essential course-care task that is surprisingly simple

Broken tees may seem harmless, but they can actually cause several issues on the golf course. Mark Patterson, a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, explains that broken tees are not only unsightly but can also cause damage to the equipment used to maintain the course. Reel mowers, which are commonly used on teeing grounds, can be negatively impacted by broken tees getting caught in the bed knives, leading to streaking and unevenness in the grass. This can result in time-consuming repairs and even costly engine damage in extreme cases.

To prevent these issues, golfers can simply pick up their broken tees and dispose of them in the small mesh trays often found on tee boxes. This small act can go a long way in maintaining the quality of the course and saving valuable time for maintenance staff. If a mesh tray is not available, golfers can also sweep broken tees into the rough, as they do not cause damage to rotary mowers used in those areas. Alternatively, broken tees can be stored in pockets for reuse or pushed into the ground so that they are level with the surface, reducing the risk of damage by lawnmowers.

While broken tees may seem insignificant compared to other forms of litter on the course, they can accumulate quickly, especially on par-3 holes where golfers frequently use irons. By educating golfers about the impact of broken tees and encouraging them to be mindful of their disposal, the overall aesthetics and maintenance of the course can be greatly improved. In a video tutorial, Patterson demonstrates the proper techniques for handling broken tees and emphasizes the importance of being a responsible golf citizen.

Patterson suggests that golfers take a moment to consider the consequences of leaving broken tees behind and make a conscious effort to dispose of them properly. By taking small steps like picking up broken tees and placing them in designated receptacles, golfers can contribute to a cleaner and more environmentally friendly golf course. Additionally, by being aware of the potential damage that broken tees can cause to equipment, golfers can support the efforts of maintenance staff in keeping the course in top condition.

The issue of broken tees is not limited to aesthetics and equipment damage, as it also reflects the level of respect that golfers have for the course and its upkeep. By demonstrating a commitment to proper course care, golfers can set a positive example for others and create a more enjoyable experience for everyone. As a golf, food, and travel writer, Josh Sens encourages golfers to be mindful of their actions on the course and make a conscious effort to preserve its beauty and integrity. By working together, golfers and course maintenance staff can ensure that broken tees are no longer overlooked and contribute to a more sustainable and enjoyable golfing environment.
