Thomas Detry’s first career PGA Tour victory at the WM Phoenix Open was a significant milestone for the 32-year-old pro. Despite almost skipping the tournament due to fatigue from a busy schedule, Detry ultimately decided to play and ended up winning by seven strokes at TPC Scottsdale. In a recent interview on GOLF’s Subpar podcast, Detry shared the behind-the-scenes story of his victory and the struggles he faced leading up to the tournament.

Detry revealed that leading up to the Phoenix Open, he had played in five tournaments in six weeks and had plans to play in the Genesis Invitational the following week. Feeling exhausted and unsure about his decision to play in Phoenix, Detry took a day off before the tournament and arrived at the range feeling unprepared. However, a late-night call to his coach helped him make a critical adjustment to his swing, which ultimately led to his success on the course.

One of the key changes Detry made was focusing on keeping his left arm straight and maintaining a wide swing arc during his backswing. This simple adjustment helped him strike the ball consistently and find his confidence on the course. With scores of 66, 64, 65, and 65, Detry’s consistent play throughout the tournament led to his dominant victory. Despite some recent struggles, including two missed cuts, Detry’s win has propelled him to 9th in the FedEx Cup standings.

Detry’s victory at the Phoenix Open was a culmination of his hard work and perseverance, despite facing doubts and challenges leading up to the tournament. His ability to make effective adjustments to his game and find his rhythm on the course was a testament to his skill and determination as a professional golfer. Moving forward, Detry will look to build on his success and continue to compete at a high level on the PGA Tour.

The unique club in Detry’s bag, a hybrid from 2017, played a key role in his performance at the Phoenix Open. Coupled with his improved swing technique and mental focus, Detry’s equipment choices and playing style have contributed to his success on the course. As he looks ahead to future tournaments, Detry will continue to fine-tune his game and seek ways to maintain his competitive edge.

In conclusion, Thomas Detry’s victory at the WM Phoenix Open was a memorable moment in his career and a significant achievement as a professional golfer. Despite facing challenges and doubts leading up to the tournament, Detry’s perseverance and ability to make critical adjustments to his game ultimately led to his success on the course. With a newfound confidence and a top-ten ranking in the FedEx Cup standings, Detry is poised to continue making an impact on the PGA Tour and build on his recent accomplishments.
