Advancements in technology have completely changed the way golf is taught and played. With the help of data-driven insights, instructors and players are able to analyze every aspect of the game in great detail. Concepts that were once considered fundamental are now being re-examined and updated, thanks to innovations like launch monitors, pressure plates, and 3D analysis. One such example is the evolution of the putting stroke.

In a recent Instagram post by GOLF top 100 Teacher Chris Como, Stephen Sweeney, a top putting coach for Tour players like Collin Morikawa and Shane Lowry, challenges the traditional belief that the toe of the putter should pass the heel in the through-stroke. This idea originated from old putting evaluations that were done using 2D cameras, which created a misleading appearance of a more horizontal release pattern. As technology has advanced, we now have a clearer understanding of what truly happens during the putting stroke.

According to Sweeney, the key is not a rotational release, but a vertical one. Rather than focusing on a around-the-body motion, players should allow their hands to naturally rise through the stroke. By understanding the proper release of the putter and controlling the shaft angle, players can better control the clubface and release pattern. This new understanding has shifted the way putting is taught and practiced, with a focus on emulating the techniques of some of the best putters in golf, such as Tiger Woods.

The traditional idea that the toe of the putter should pass the heel has been debunked with the help of new technology. By examining the putting stroke from a different perspective, instructors and players alike are able to improve their skills and performance on the green. This shift in thinking has led to a greater emphasis on the vertical release pattern, rather than the horizontal one that was previously believed to be correct.

As technology continues to advance, the game of golf will likely see even more changes and improvements in the future. Players can now use tools like launch monitors, pressure plates, and 3D analysis to gain valuable insights into their game and make necessary adjustments. With the guidance of top instructors and coaches like Stephen Sweeney, golfers can refine their skills and reach new levels of success on the course.

In conclusion, the evolution of the putting stroke is just one example of how technology has revolutionized the game of golf. By challenging traditional concepts and embracing new insights, players are able to improve their performance and achieve greater success on the course. With the help of advanced tools and the guidance of knowledgeable instructors, golfers can continue to refine their skills and reach their full potential in the game. As technology continues to play a role in golf instruction, we can expect to see even more innovations that will shape the future of the sport.
