The PGA Tour’s 2025 season kicks off with The Sentry, a $20m signature event in Hawaii featuring a star-studded field of 59 players. The tournament is open to all PGA Tour winners in 2024 and the top 50 in the FedEx Cup rankings. Notable players competing in The Sentry include Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, and Ludvig Aberg, while some big names are missing from the field this week.

Scottie Scheffler, the World No.1 and three-time PGA Tour Player of the Year, is absent from The Sentry after a freak accident on Christmas Day that required surgery on his hand. He is expected to return later in the month at the AmEx tournament. Rory McIlroy, the World No.3, has also chosen to skip The Sentry and will begin his year in the Middle East.

Tommy Fleetwood, another top player, will make his first start of the year in Abu Dhabi as part of the GB&I squad for the Team Cup. He will then compete in the Dubai Desert Classic before focusing on the PGA Tour. Shane Lowry, ranked No. 27 in the world, will likely make his first appearance of the year at the Dubai Desert Classic after skipping The Sentry.

Jordan Spieth, currently recovering from wrist surgery, did not qualify for The Sentry after a winless 2024 season. Korean star Tom Kim, who had a challenging year in 2024, is also absent from this week’s tournament. Similarly, Rickie Fowler, who had a disappointing 2024 season with no wins and a 101st place finish in the FedEx Cup, will be looking to bounce back in 2025.

Despite some big names missing from The Sentry, the tournament promises to be an exciting start to the PGA Tour season with top players competing for the prestigious title and a share of the $20m prize purse. Fans can expect to see some thrilling golf action as the year begins with The Sentry and sets the stage for an exciting season ahead. Stay tuned for updates and results from The Sentry and other PGA Tour events throughout 2025.
