Patrick Cantlay and Ludvig Aberg are leading the 124th U.S. Open after strong performances on Thursday morning. Cantlay shot a five-under 65, while Aberg shot a four-under 66, putting them at the top of the leaderboard. Cantlay, known for his ability to hit greens and have a strong short game, leads the field in SG: Around the green. Aberg, on the other hand, had a consistent round, hitting all fairways and 16 of 18 greens.

Cantlay, a seasoned player with 8 PGA Tour wins, has had success in majors, with four top 10 finishes in 30 starts. Although he has not had a top 10 finish in the U.S. Open, he has shown strong performances in recent years. Aberg, on the other hand, is a rising star in the golf world, with only three major starts in his career. Despite his limited experience, he has had strong finishes in his recent events, including a second-place finish at the Masters.

The debate for the best player without a major title is a ongoing topic among golf enthusiasts. Candidates like Viktor Hovland and Rickie Fowler are strong contenders for this title based on their current form and career accomplishments. Cantlay and Aberg have now emerged as front-runners after their impressive performance at the U.S. Open.

Both Cantlay and Aberg acknowledge the challenges of playing in a major championship like the U.S. Open. The difficulty of the course and the pressure of the event can test even the most experienced players. With predictions of the course playing even more difficult in the coming days, both players are focused on maintaining their disciplined approach to the game.

Aberg’s success as a collegiate golfer and immediate impact on the European Ryder Cup have prepared him for major championships. His recent strong finishes on the PGA Tour indicate that he is a player to watch in the future. Cantlay’s experience and consistent play make him a formidable competitor in any tournament, including the U.S. Open.

With the tournament still in its early stages, Cantlay and Aberg’s lead may be challenged by other top players in the field. As the competition heats up, golf fans will be watching closely to see if Cantlay can secure his first major title or if Aberg can continue his impressive run in major championships. The U.S. Open is known for producing dramatic finishes, and this year’s event is shaping up to be no different.
